Germany Coach: How We Stopped Nigeria

Germany coach Frank Wormuth has revealed how his team were able to overcome the Flying Eagles in their round of 16 FIFA U-20 World Cup clash which they won 1-0.

Reacting to the win, Wormuth who spoke highly of the Flying Eagles, however said his players deserved to advance at the expense of Nigeria.

He told fifa.com: “I like Nigeria and they are very good technically, which makes them extremely difficult to play against.

“We were able to keep the ball under pressure and that was our only chance to break through their defence. In the end, I give congratulations to my team for finding the answer to the problems Nigeria posed us. They deserved the win and I am very impressed with them.

“I am especially proud of my team’s defence today. Of course, our aim is to get to the final in Auckland but to get there we must go step to step and our next step is Mali. The German mentality is to always think this way. I expect Mali to play in quite a similar way to what we saw today from Nigeria.”

A 19th minute strike by Levin Öztunali was enough for the European champions to see off a lackluster Flying Eagles side.

Sevilla Players Will Beg Emery To Stay - Carrico

Sevilla's players will beg Europa League-winning coach Unai Emery to stay amid reported approaches from across Europe, according to defender Daniel Carrico.

The Spanish outfit clinched a record fourth Europa League crown on Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Dnipro in Warsaw, successfully defending the title they won with victory over Benfica in Turin 12 months ago.

And the consistent successes have led to interest in Emery from the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid and West Ham United in recent weeks, but Carrico is hopeful that the players will be able to persuade him to stay now that Champions League football has been secured.

"I think he is the key for us. He is our leader, a very important coach. We hope he will stay with us for next season but it is difficult because he is one of the best coaches in the world," Carrico told Goal.

"But now that we are going to play in the Champions League I hope that will help to persuade him to stay with us.

"We will beg him to stay. Of course nobody can ask more than to play in the Champions League. We are going to play in the best competition and that might help us when we ask him to stay."

The Rojiblancos were backed by around 10,000 in the Stadion Narodowy, and Carrico was quick to praise their impact throughout a season which also saw them finish in fifth place in La Liga.

"The fans are crazy. You should see at least one game in our stadium because it is unbelievable how they help us to win games. Sometimes we are losing and when they start to sing it is unbelievable. We just keep winning for them.

"We went 34 games one year without losing a game in our stadium, and in that you can see how important our supporters are."

And with Champions League football to come, the 26-year-old says there is no reason why they cannot succeed in the showpiece competition.

"We don't know what more we can do, but we have great ambitions and next season we will play in the Champions League. It's the biggest competition in the world and we want to do something in this competition."

Reports - Man United Star David De Gea Agrees Five-Year Real Madrid Contract

David De Gea has agreed a five-year contract with Real Madrid, according to Spanish newspaper Marca.

The Red Devils No.1 has long been admired by Real Madrid and it appears they have finally got their man.

All that needs to be completed, according to the report, is a transfer fee between the two clubs, with United wanting as much as £40million, while Real are keen to keep the figure around £30m.

Louis van Gaal admitted on Friday the club had drawn up a list of possible replacements for the Spanish shot stopper, with Tottenham star Hugo Lloris, Chelsea's Petr Cech and Stoke's Asmir Begovic all of interest.

It's unknown whether the move will open the door to a possible Premier League return for Gareth Bale.

Diego Maradona says Lionel Messi is currently the best player in the world, but insists his own goals were “more beautiful” than those of the Barcelona star.

The Argentine legend, who played for the Catalan club, as well as the likes of Napoli and Boca Juniors during a glittering career, is often been labelled as the greatest ever to play the sport.

And while he believes his countryman is the best there is in the modern game, rating him above Real Madrid ace Cristiano Ronaldo, he says that Messi is still developing as a footballer.

“I think the goals come with the style. I think Messi is finding his own style, but he is killing it with the goals. This makes you accelerate the pace. Most likely, he will find his style very soon,” Maradona told CNN.

“I think that I had my own style from the very beginning, so that is the point at which I could be better than Messi. But Messi has scored 300 goals, whereas I think I scored a little over 200 in my whole career.

“But the thing is, my goals were more beautiful!”

Messi scored two goals in Barcelona’s 5-3 aggregate victory over Bayern Munich, which saw them book a spot in the Champions League final against Juventus.

Inzaghi: I'm not feeling the heat at AC Milan

Filippo Inzaghi has dismissed the suggestion that he is cracking under the pressure at AC Milan, insisting that he remains "happy" at San Siro.

The former Italy international only succeeded Clarence Seedorf at the helm last summer but, after a relatively encouraging first half of the season, the Rossoneri suffered a dramatic dip in form at the turn of the year.

Indeed, Milan have now gone five Serie A games without a win, losing their last three in succession, and it has been claimed that Inzaghi is starting the feel the strain of having his position openly discussed on a daily basis.

However, the World Cup winner says that he is still enjoying his job and is ignoring all of the speculation surrounding both his future and that of the club, with owner Silvio Berlusconi set to sell a significant amount of shares to Thai businessman Bee Taechaubol.

"I am very lucky and happy and I am certainly not tired," the 41-year-old told reporters on Friday.

"But talking about Milan’s future right now is not something I am interested in.

"When you have a president like Silvio Berlusconi you know you are in good hands because he wants the best for Milan."

Milan currently sit 11th in Serie A, nine points behind fifth-placed Fiorentina, who, as it stands, occupy the final Europa League berth.

Given there are just four rounds of the season remaining, the Rossoneri's hopes of qualifying for Europe are all but over, but Inzaghi is still calling on his players to finish their campaign with a flourish, starting with Saturday's clash with Roma at the Giuseppe Meazza.

"I am aware that it will be a tough match but also very appealing as we’re going to be facing a side fighting for a Champions League finish and in need of points," he stated.

"But we have four games left to finish the season strongly and with our heads held high.

"To beat Roma we clearly have to play the perfect match and that’s what we’re hoping for.

"I think by doing this we can come away with a positive result as both the team and I are in need of one right now.

"During our first meeting earlier in the season we played very well but I'm upset that after that game that we haven’t been able to continue improving.

"I hope that we can find that identity again in these final four matches."

And the high-profile fight saw a number of football's top players - including Neymar and Wayne Rooney - get involved with their comments before, during and after the bout.

Inter denied a clear penalty - Mancini

Roberto Mancini was left fuming that Inter were denied a penalty for a handball against Luca Antonelli in Sunday's 0-0 draw with AC Milan.

Inter had two goals ruled out - one for a foul in the build up and another for offside - and they will feel they should have had the chance to earn bragging rights at San Siro when Hernanes' effort struck the arm of Antonelli in the second half.

Mancini feels Milan were lucky to get a point out of the game and was disappointed referee Luca Banti failed to point to the spot.

"I take consolation from the way we played for 70 minutes of tonight’s match. We did well and tried to win. AC Milan defended well and were lucky at times," he said.

"I’m pleased with the team, they gave everything, but it was a definite penalty. There needs to be consistency in the refereeing.

"I’ve said nothing for 20 games but I think I can say it now."

Mancini, though, did not have any complaints that an own goal from Philippe Mexes was chalked off with less than 20 minutes remaining, conceding that Rodrigo Palacio had fouled Antonelli.

"The disallowed goal, there is the foul from Palacio," he added. "I saw the replay and it was a definitely a Palacio foul."

Andrea Ranocchia believes a share of the spoils was fair for both teams, but shared his coach's anger at not having been awarded a spot kick.

"The 0-0 scoreline really fits the game. We had a great match and created many chances. That we were denied a penalty is sensational. In games like this, such errors are huge,"

Awoniyi Will Be A Star, Says Kanu Nwankwo

The former Nigeria captain has predicted a bright future for the Flying Eagles forward should he keep up his impressive performance

Kanu Nwankwo has lauded the recent form of Taiwo Awoniyi and feels that the Nigeria Youth international has what it takes to become one of football’s undisputed star players in future.

The 18-year-old has been scintillating so far this year helping the Nigeria U20 side win the 2015 African Youth Championship as well as grabbing a brace that helped the Nigeria U23 team qualify for the All African Games.

According to Papillo who is an ardent follower of the rookie, Awoniyi is the hottest Nigerian kid and should he remain consistent, he will become a star.

“Watched him play for U17/U20 and talked to him, our hottest kid and if he keeps doing his best he will be a star. AWONIYI,” Kanu wrote on his Twitter handle.

Ex-Madrid Man Reveals Ronaldo's Secret

Getafe star Pablo Sarabia is qualified more than most when giving his thoughts on the debate as to whether Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world.

Having faced both men in La Liga on more than one occasion, he also played alongside the Portugal captain having been part of the Real Madrid set-up until 2011. 

"For me, Ronaldo is the best player in the world," the attacking midfielder, who has played for all of Spain's underaged teams, told Goal. "Yes it is true that Leo is supernatural, because he has pure skill, from another planet. 

"But Cristiano is an example of pure willpower. Physically he is incredible because it seems that every day he is striving to be the best. That is an incredible quality, one that has led him to where he is now. Without that characteristic he would not be there, for sure."

Ronaldo has a chance to right some wrongs on Tuesday, as Real Madrid visit city rivals Atletico Madrid for the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash. The last Madrid derby saw the Rojiblancos claim a 4-0 thrashing but ex-Real trainee Sarabia feels his old club should stick to their guns.

"Both teams know each other very well. [Atletico boss] Diego Simeone has a great way of analysing matches, which he has shown several times. Real Madrid have to play their game and try to stop Atletico from blocking their style of play, which is what happened in other games. 

"It is a difficult game for both sides. In recent years they have been fighting many battles because both teams are very good and compete for all competitions. I personally would have preferred that they weren't drawn against each other in the quarter-finals, to give a chance for more Spanish teams to be in the semis. It's always nice to play against teams from other countries because everyone bets on the Spanish team."

One of Atletico's main strengths in recent years has been their ability to cope with the pressure of the big matches. The Madrid derby now counts as one of Europe's most anticipated clashes, with last season's Champions League final victory for Real followed by a series of great results for Atletico, including two wins and two draws in La Liga and the Copa del Rey this term.

"There is always pressure and it's greater at Real Madrid," the 22-year-old continued. "They're the best club in the world and you have to notice that. Sometimes you follow a defeat with victory and go from being the worst to being the best.

"This is what happens when you are so big and there is so much demand. A match between Atletico and Real is always great and you have that extra motivation that makes you push yourself."

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti has come under pressure personally, with a poor run through March seeing the Blancos lose their Liga lead to Barcelona and almost go out of Europe after narrowly beating Schalke 5-4 in the previous round. 

Goal understands that Ancelotti will lose his job if he fails to win the Champions League or La Liga this season. One problem with this strategy is that very few options currently exist to replace the Italian. One name which has been mentioned is legendary France midfielder Zinedine Zidane, who currently works as the club's Castilla coach.

When asked if Zidane was ready for the top job, Sarabia was definitive. 

"Of course. He has no experience as a manager but has plenty of experience of organising a team and how to deal with the different people within it. He has all the grounding and knows everything about football. In the end that is what is important."

Sarabia also had positive words about Ancelotti's predecessor, controversial Portuguese Jose Mourinho, who had a difficult relationship with the club's hierarchy, the Spanish media and football federation. Despite all this conflict, the Chelsea boss never upset Sarabia. 

"He always behaved very well with me. He is much closer [to players] than everyone thinks, than I thought. Maybe he doesn’t show this side of himself to the press, but face-to-face he is a good person.

"I am very grateful that he gave me my debut and I have only good words for him. He never once treated me badly."

Liverpool Ladies Hail Asisat Oshoala On All African Games Ticket

The Reds have commended the striker for scoring twice to help her country to an 8-0 home win over Mali and qualifying for this year’s continental games

Liverpool Ladies have praised Asisat Oshoala on helping the Super Falcons secure a qualification ticket to the 2015 All African Games on Friday, the Nigerian striker has told Goal .

The Super Falcons recorded a healthy 9-1 aggregate victory over Mali to qualify for the continental games scheduled to hold from September 8-17 in Brazzaville, Congo.

Oshoala, who netted a brace and made three assists in the 8-0 win against Mali in the final round, second leg clash played at the National Stadium, Abuja, thanked the Reds for permitting her to help her country while expressing her delight at justifying her release.

"I've been receiving many messages from my [Liverpool Ladies] teammates and even my coach has called to congratulate me," Oshoala told Goal.

"When you allow a player to go for national assignment, you will be very happy when the player gives her best and comes out good in a game she was released to play.

"Because now we have a game in my team and I’m supposed to be in the team but they allowed me to come play for my country. I think they should be proud of me - I didn't come here for nothing. I really came here to make impact and I know they are really happy about it.

The reigning African woman player of the year exonerated herself of any praise insisting her teammates deserve all the accolades for their solid performance and commitment displayed in achieving the qualification feat that eluded them in 2011.

"I feel very happy about our victory - it’s not about me but about the team qualifying for the All African Games. Having played 1-1 in the away game and coming home to give our best and make sure we came out victorious in the game.

"I think it's a very good thing for us as a team and also as a nation. This game went well and the communication among the girls was very okay. I’m proud of the girls.

"It is a good thing for me as a player to get two goals and three assists. But as I said earlier it's not about me, but about the team - the country has qualified that is the most important.

"After winning the AWC, there was a lot getting into players' heads when you feel you are the champions of Africa. But in today's game, you could see the seriousness and commitment in the game. They didn't play like they played 1-1 in the first leg.

"They just came like it’s on a neutral ground and like it's a final. I think the commitment, seriousness and sacrifice for various players who left their club to play for the national team. It was a good mark and with the level of performance, I believe we can face any team," she concluded.

Emeghara Gets One Match Ban

San Jose Earthquakes Designated Player Innocent Emeghara faces a one-game suspension for a challenge that left a visible knot on Luke Mulholland’s head on Sunday.

Emeghara was shown a yellow card for the challenge in the 41st minute of the 1-0 loss to Real Salt Lake, in which he appears to lead with his elbow before clattering into the Real Salt Lake midfielder.

The MLS Disciplinary Committee determined that the challenge endangered the safety of an opponent, and it also fined Emeghara an undisclosed amount.

The Earthquakes were also cited by the Disciplinary Committee for players’ actions in the wake of the foul. Players surrounded referee Armando Villarreal in protest, and this violated MLS’s mass confrontation policy.

The foul by Emeghara set up the eventual game-winning goal by Javier Morales when he sent the rebound of the subsequent free kick into the net.

Arsenal legend David Seaman has advised Arsene Wenger NOT to launch a bid for Petr Cech.

The Gunners are reportedly lining up a £7million swoop for the out-of-favour Chelsea goalkeeper in the January transfer window.

But Seaman is against the move as he wants Wenger to keep faith with Wojciech Szczesny.

Speaking on the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast, the club’s legendary former stopper said: “Wojciech is coming off his best season last season with Arsenal and I don’t think that anybody warrants taking his place because he is not making mistakes.

“Arsenal are conceding goals, but it is not through goalkeeping errors that they are conceding.”

Arsenal have lost more more points from winning positions than any other Premier League side this season, and are sitting sixth in the table ahead of Saturday's visit of Manchester United.

Seaman insists that has little to do with Szczesny and is instead down to a lack of leadership throughout the team.

He added: “They have not got anybody in the team at the moment that can grab a game and think, right, we are 2-0 up or 3-0 up, let's sit in front of the back four, see ten minutes out so we don't concede a goal, and then push on from there. We used to do that with Patrick Vieira. Tony Adams or I would say, 'Patrick, just sit in front of the defenders for ten minutes'.

"You would think someone like Per Mertesacker would be good enough to do that because he has got tons of international experience. I don’t know how vocal he is in a game or how the other players are, but [Mathieu] Flamini looks like the only one doing it at the moment."

With Arsenal 11 points behind leaders Chelsea just 11 games into the season, Wenger has already given up hope of winning the title.

Seaman insists it is too early to completely write off the Gunners, but admits their London rivals look to be on a different level.

"They have got a slight chance. Chelsea are looking so good and so strong, but if Arsenal can get on one of their runs where they win a big group of games together then they can put a bit of pressure on,” he said.

"At the moment Chelsea are almost in second gear and they have got three more gears to go."

No concerns for Henderson as new Liverpool deal nears

Jordan Henderson admits he has no concerns about signing a new Liverpool contract.

The 24-year-old, who was named the Reds' vice-captain last month and is viewed as the long-term successor to Steven Gerrard, has less than two years to run on his current deal.

Striker Daniel Sturridge signed a new long-term extension last week and Henderson is expected to follow suit as low-key talks have been on-going for some time.

"I am just concentrating on playing football. I am not worried about that," said the England midfielder, who scored Liverpool's winner against West Brom on Saturday.

"I am enjoying my football, I love this club and I want to be here for many years so that shouldn't be an issue.

"I'll let my agent sort that out, it's nothing to do with me."

Raheem Sterling, who has reportedly attracted the attention of this month's Champions League opponents Real Madrid, and Philippe Coutinho are next in line for new contract offers to reflect their growing importance to the team.

Chelsea cautious over Costa’s ongoing injury struggles, admits Mourinho

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has admitted the club remain cautious over Diego Costa’s hamstring injury, revealing the striker’s niggle prevented him from starting the Blues’ Champions League opener against Schalke.

Mourinho’s men took an early lead at Stamford Bridge when Cesc Fabregas found the net for his first Chelsea goal, but the hosts were wasteful throughout, with Klaas-Jan Huntelaar netting an equaliser after the break to clinch a 1-1 draw.

The Blues certainly missed Costa’s presence up front as Didier Drogba, who was handed his first start since his surprise return to the club this summer, missed a number of glaring chances, while Eden Hazard was also guilty of a lack of clinical touch in front of goal.

And while the Spanish star - who scored a hat-trick in Saturday's victory over Swansea - came off the bench for a late cameo, he had little impact against the German side, with Mourinho revealing his concern over the forward’s condition.

"Costa has a problem," said the Blues boss.

"If he has one week to let the muscle recover he can start a game. Playing on Saturday, three days is not enough for him to recover.

"It was not to protect for the game Sunday [at Manchester City] it was because today he was not in condition to start the game."

Costa limped out of last season's Champions League final with Atletico Madrid with a hamstring problem and the injury recurred while on international duty earlier this month with Spain.

"He played here one match and he was perfect," Mourinho added.

"He went to the national team and after the game against France he came back to us injured.

"He came to us [from Atletico] and he was completely fine. He had a problem again in the national team, not with us.

"Now we have the problem and now we have to resolve the problem the best we can.

"Today he was not in condition to play. Sunday we believe he is.

"Next week against Bolton [in the Capital One Cup] for sure he isn't. We have to manage the situation until the moment he's completely fine.

"If today he starts the game, for sure he cannot play on Sunday. We have to go step by step."

It’s fair to say only Wojciech Szczesny came out of Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League with any credit.

The Gunners were lacklustre and easily dispatched by their German opponents, who barely had to break sweat to claim victory.

And Arsenal fans directed most of their ire towards captain Mikel Arteta who was completely anonymous in midfield for 77 minutes until he was finally replaced by Lukas Podolkski.

Welbeck’s finishing leaves Wenger frustrated

Arsene Wenger admitted Danny Welbeck’s finishing has left him disappointed but insists the striker will improve at the Emirates.

The summer signing from Manchester United, who was criticised for his poor conversion rate by Louis van Gaal, missed several good chances for the Gunners as they lost 2-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

But after the game new boss Wenger stated his belief the England forward will come good for the north London club.

"Danny [Welbeck] will improve,” he said. “I don't think we have to make a problem of that.

"He had a very lively first-half. He had two or three good chances but couldn't finish them. There was one obvious one. We have to be patient with him."

Liverpool aren’t at the standard of last season, admits Rodgers

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has admitted his side’s standards have slipped compared to the Reds team which secured a Premier League runner-up spot last season.

The Merseyside outfit seem to feeling the effects of star striker Luis Suarez’s exit to Barcelona this summer, while their attacking force has taken an additional hit with the early injury blow to now-first choice frontman Daniel Sturridge.

That has left Rodgers with summer signing Mario Balotelli as his main man up front, though the Italian failed to really impress at the weekend as the Reds slumped to a 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa at Anfield.

The maverick forward finally opened his account for his new club just a few days later though, putting Liverpool in front - with what Rodgers described as a "world-class finish" - in their Champions League opener against Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets on Tuesday night.

But despite Balotelli giving the hosts the lead, it was Steven Gerrard who saved the Merseyside outfit once again as the captain netted a stoppage-time penalty to secure a 2-1 victory after the visitors netted shock equaliser.

It was a nervy night for the Reds, but Rodgers insists his new-look squad, bolstered by over £100million worth of summer arrivals, will improve with time as they start to gel.

“We’re not at the standard we were at last season, that’s for sure,” said the boss. “We’re not at the level yet.

“We’ve got a lot of adaptation going on with new players coming in, and even though they fit the profile and are working hard, it’s still a new team.

“We’re still a work in progress, but we could do no more than win tonight, and we did that.

“It’s important to keep winning games through this period, and winning in the Champions League is always good.

"I think it was a great night for everyone at the club," he added. "Obviously it's been five years so to get first game back in and get the result was excellent.

"Big congratulations to the players because they showed great character and commitment tonight to get the result."

Norwich beat Cardiff in six-goal thriller after brilliant comeback

Norwich came out on top of the battle of two relegated Premier League sides, as the Canaries stages a brilliant comeback to beat Cardiff in a six-goal thriller at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Both sides are desperate to secure immediate promotion back into the top flight, but it is Neil Adams’ men who look most likely at this early stage of the season, as a 4-2 victory lifts them up to in second place level on points with table topping Nottingham Forest.

Cardiff got off to a brilliant start with two goals in the opening 22 minutes from Joe Ralls and Aron Gunnarsson.

But the game was turned on his head after the break as Norwich began to dominate, with Martin Olsson pulling one back for the visitors shortly after the restart and Wes Hoolahan pulling them level on the hour-mark.

Bluebirds boss Ole Gunnar Solskjær then brought Nicky Maynard and Tom Adeyemi on from the bench in an attempt to mix it up, but it only got worse for the home side as Michael Turner scored in the 70th minute, with Cameron Jerome also finishing late on as boos began to sound from the home support.

Meanwhile, Brentford are into the play-off places after a 3-2 win over Brighton, with strikes from Moses Odubajo, Andre Gray and Jonathan Douglas sealing victory despite Seagulls duo Danny Holla and Gordon Greer’s goals.

The pressure continues to pile on Fulham boss Felix Magath, as his side slumped to a 3-0 defeat to Reading – the Cottagers’ fifth loss of the season.
