Leon Osman claims Everton CAN finish higher than arch-rivals Liverpool this season – despite the Reds’ summer spending
Leon Osman claims Everton CAN finish higher in the Premier League table than arch-rivals Liverpool this season – despite the Reds’ spending spree.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have splashed the cash this summer, following Luis Suarez's departure for Barcelona, laying out around £90million on Emre Can, Lazar Markovic and Divock Origi, along with Southampton trio Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren.

The Toffees haven’t been shy in the transfer market either, signing Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku for a club record £28m, and Osman, who will celebrate his testimonial on Sunday, believes Roberto Martinez’s side has what it takes to surpass their Merseyside rivals.

When asked whether Everton can finish higher than Liverpool, he told the Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast show: “Yes we can. It’s going to be difficult though.

“Liverpool have strengthened, but so have we.

“We both have extra commitments with Europe this year but we aim to finish above them every season.”

England thrash India in third Test to level series

England thrash India in third Test to level five-match series
England have won the third Test against India by 266 runs at the Ageas Bowl to level the series at 1-1.

Moeen Ali finished with figures of 6 for 67, while James Anderson picked up 2 for 24, as Alastair Cook's side sealed their first win in 11 Tests.

Having been set a world record run chase of 445, India resumed on 112 for four.

But any faint hopes they had of rescuing the match were soon over, with Anderson taking the wicket of Rohit Sharma with just his third delivery.

Sharma appeared shocked to be given out caught-behind pushing forward at a delivery he might perhaps have left.

He had to go, though, without addition to his overnight six - and India did not reopen their account either until well into the fourth over of another sunny morning.

There was no doubt about Anderson's next success, another caught-behind and Jos Buttler's sixth on debut, when Mahendra Singh Dhoni got a much more obvious edge on some full-length swing to also go for six.

Given their recent history, and impending hearings, new batsman Jadeja was surely also on Anderson's hit-list.

But having got both Dhoni and the left-hander among his five first-innings victims, Anderson could not double up this time.

Instead, after a 13-over wait for England, it was Moeen who got Jadeja - yorking himself as the off-spinner drifting one into him to hit the bottom of off-stump.

For good measure, Mooen then saw off Bhuvneshwar Kumar - so often England's stumbling block in the India tail this summer - for a duck, his second wicket in the same over, with an inside-edge on to his pad and into the hands of gully.

Moeen then made short work of Mohammed Shami, clean-bowling him and soon afterwards number 11 Pankaj Singh as the visitors were bowled out before lunch for 178 to end the match.

The only shame was that, although a much bigger crowd than expected was in attendance to cheer Cook's team to their first win since last summer's Ashes, some arrived barely in time to see the tourists' terminal falter.

Park-and-ride arrangements at this out-of-town venue did not extend until the last day of the match, and demand turned out to be high to witness the culmination of England's mid-series resurgence.

In the end, though, India lasted long enough to ensure almost everyone arrived in time for the end of England's party.

The hosts will now be hoping for good news with regards to Anderson.

The linchpin seamer, who finished with match figures of seven for 77, could miss the fourth Test next week if found guilty of the Level Three offence India have cited him for.

Pura vida and a personal best for Ticos

Pura vida and a personal best for Ticos

It was in September 2013 that Costa Rica finally consigned to history the trauma of missing out on the previous FIFA World Cup™. Eight games into the final round of qualifying for Brazil 2014, Los Ticos had amassed 15 points, sufficient to guarantee them one of CONCACAF’s three automatic berths, and all with two matchdays to spare. A clear case of mission accomplished.

The success was also mirrored on the FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, where they found themselves in 31st place the following month. Just one year earlier, by contrast, Jorge Luis Pinto’s charges were ranked a distant 72nd. In the intervening 12 months, results had been overwhelmingly positive, as they claimed the 2013 Copa Centroamericana and navigated the region’s World Cup qualifiers with just a solitary defeat. Yet for all that, the best was still to come.

Passion in their veins
The expression pura vida (pure life) has become synonymous with Costa Rica, where it is widely used in greetings and goodbyes, as well as countless other social interactions. The catch-all phrase is a constant reminder of the people’s passion for life and joyful demeanour. Interestingly, it is not just used during good times, but also in difficult moments when positivity and a lift may be required.

It was precisely the latter scenario that Los Ticos found themselves in as the World Cup approached, despite many having predicted plain sailing. The year began badly with friendly defeats to Chile (4-0) and Korea Republic (1-0) then got even worse with a serious injury to Bryan Oviedo. The team’s first choice left-back broke both his tibia and fibula in late January and would eventually miss out on Brazil 2014. Costa Rica’s travails were also reflected in the following month’s FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking, where they slipped back to 35th place.

The Central Americans had little choice but to call upon their renowned determination and passion to get back on track. Pinto’s side looked to be doing just that in a trio of pre-World Cup friendlies, beating Paraguay (2-1), losing to Japan (3-1) and drawing with the Republic of Ireland (1-1) – results that moved them up to 28th on June’s global ladder.

With everything set for their Brazilian adventure, Tico fans got the untimely news that Alvaro Saborio, the team’s top scorer in qualifying with eight goals, had fractured a metatarsal in training and would miss the World Cup.

With no time to feel sorry for himself, Pinto shuffled his pack and opted for a 5-4-1 formation in the Group D opener against Uruguay. Junior Diaz patrolled the entire left flank, providing a raft of crosses for Joel Campbell, while on the right, Oscar Duarte linked up well with midfield maestro Bryan Ruiz. Playing with speed and great mobility, Costa Rica downed a strong Uruguay side 3-1 to rack up their first three points.

Against Italy, it was the turn of Yeltsin Tejeda and Celso Borges to dominate the midfield. With Andrea Pirlo neutralised, the Central Americans were able to defend the lead given them by their skipper Ruiz. They then rounded off the first phase with a scoreless draw against England, in the process topping Group D and progressing to the Round of 16 for only the second time in their history.

Greece provided the next opposition and a tense encounter required penalties to separate the sides. A combination of flawless spot-kicking from the Tico players and Keylor Navas’s save took them into the unchartered waters of the last eight.

There was sense of déjà vu against the Netherlands in the quarter-final, when they also defended well and looked to hit their opponents on the break. And although penalties were once again required, this time Bryan Ruiz and Michael Umana failed to score and the dream was over.

With their heads held high, Costa Rica bade farewell to Brazil 2014, the bitter taste of elimination sweetened somewhat by the fact they had made history. It was the culmination of a long journey paved with wonderful triumphs, difficult moments and, above all, pura vida.

As for the numbers game, all those highs and lows produced a happy ending in the form of 16th place on the most recent FIFA/Coca-Cola World Ranking. Now they can look to the future, and Russia 2018, with optimism thanks to a generation of young players who have shown their capacity to rewrite the record books and make history.

Nacional edge past Defensor into final

Nacional edge past Defensor into final

Paraguay's Nacional booked their place in the Copa Libertadores final despite losing the second leg of their semi-final against Defensor Sporting 1-0 in Montevideo on Tuesday.

A 55th-minute strike by Adrian Luna saw Uruguayan side Defensor win the match, but Nacional's 2-0 first leg victory in Asuncion was enough to see them through to the two-legged final.

Nacional goalkeeper Ignacio Don told Fox Sports: "This in unique, unbelievable. I hope Paraguayan people can be altogether in the name of the country.

"I've always dreamt of playing in professional football and then the Copa Libertadores. Now, I'm playing the finals because we've been warriors on the field."

Nacional seem certain to meet San Lorenzo in the final, with the Argentine side playing the second leg of their semi-final against Bolivian outfit Bolivar in La Paz on Wednesday night, holding a 5-0 advantage from the first leg in Buenos Aires.

The first leg of the final takes place on 6 August, with the return leg seven days later.

Done Deal! Liverpool complete £10m Origi signing

Liverpool have completed a £10m deal to sign Divock Origi from Lille
Liverpool have completed a £10m deal to sign Divock Origi from Lille.

The 19-year-old will immediately be loaned back to the French club for the duration of the 2014-15 season.

The Reds beat competition from Premier League and European rivals to land his signature and Origi said: "I am very, very happy and delighted a club as big as Liverpool showed interest in me. I'm very excited.

"I know it's a club with a great history, great fans and a lot of great players. For me, Liverpool is one of the greatest clubs in the world and I'm very excited to be part of this great history."

Origi began his career in the youth ranks of Belgian side Genk before securing a move to Lille in 2010.

He marked his senior debut with a goal against Troyes in February 2013 and has netted a further five times for Lille.

He came to prominence at the World Cup  in Brazil, netting a late winner for Belgium against Russia in the group stages.

Liverpool target another Saints star! Reds ready to fight Tottenham for Rodriguez

Liverpool are ready to go head-to-head with Tottenham for Southampton striker Jay Rodriguez.

Mauricio Pochettino, who quit the Saints to take charge of Spurs earlier this summer, is keen to take Rodriguez with him to White Hart Lane.

talkSPORT understands the north London club have stepped up their interest this week and are hoping to conclude a double deal for the 24-year-old and teammate Morgan Schneiderlin.

But Tottenham are facing a fight with Liverpool to land the former Burnley hitman.

The Reds, looking to fill the void left by Luis Suarez's departure, are in the market for a forward after pulling the plug on a deal for Loic Remy.

Brendan Rodgers has already taken Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Dejan Lovren from Southampton, and has now set his sights on Rodriguez.

The 24-year-old is currently recovering from a serious knee injury and is not expected to return to action until October but both clubs are keen to conclude deals this summer, with Manchester City also understood to be keeping an eye on the England international.

Rodriguez is stalling over signing a new long-term deal with Southampton, and now looks certain to be the next big-name departure from the south coast club.

Estonia's one and only Poominator

Mart Poom
Were you to ask the average fan how many Estonian footballers they could name, many would be left scratching their head when trying to pluck a familiar name from their 1.3 million-strong population. For diehard fans of the English Premier League, however, it's a much simpler proposition, what with the highly memorable Mart Poom having made his name there.

The goalkeeper was a national hero, winning 120 caps and six Estonian player of the year awards, and being voted their best player of the preceding half-century in 2003. Some of his most iconic moments were played out in England, but the 6ft 5ins player thought he had missed his chance. While initially spotted playing club football in Switzerland, Poom believes his displays as Estonia aimed to reach the 1994 FIFA World Cup USA™ saw him earn him his first contract with Portsmouth under manager Jim Smith.

“It was our first World Cup qualification after re-independence (in 1991) and we had an interesting, tough group,” he told FIFA.com. “We had Italy, Portugal, Switzerland – who qualified – Scotland and Malta. Unsurprisingly, in all those games I had plenty to do! (laughs)”

However, work permit difficulties, club legend Alan Knight occupying the No1 shirt and a string of injuries saw his time on the south coast cut short, with a frustrated Poom returning to his homeland. He would get a stroke of luck though, as an infamously rearranged France 1998 qualifier against Scotland brought him back on to the radar of Smith, who was then at Derby County, a year after leaving England.

Poom explained: “He asked the Scottish goalkeeping coach to produce a scouting report on me and as it happened we drew 0-0 and I had a good game. Soon after that Derby made an offer. Coming back I was determined to do everything I could to make an impact, having already had a taste. I was never going to give up on trying to return, but I didn't expect the chance would come so quickly.”

He would sign on transfer-deadline day in March 1997 alongside Paulo Wanchope, with both taking part in astounding debuts at Old Trafford a few days later. Poom – who is now Estonia's goalkeeping coach and also runs his own team and academy – remembers the build-up to facing his idol Peter Schmeichel well.

“I had only joined the team a few days before and I didn't even know everyone's names,” he recalled with incredulity in his voice. “Our kit manager didn't even have a goalkeeper shirt in my name! He had to rush to the Manchester United megastore and take one of their other keeper shirts, cover it with black material and print my name and number on the back! I think I've still got that shirt somewhere.”

He also ended it with Schmeichel's jersey too after the game ended in a famous 3-2 victory for the newly-promoted side, which would help forge a fantastic relationship between Poom and the fans at Pride Park. It made headlines back home too, with friends and family able to tune in to Finnish TV for the huge upset, which featured a memorable run and finish from Wanchope.

After five seasons together in the top flight, relegation followed and, after a tough start to life in the English second tier, Poom left his Derbyshire home: “I left in a rush, during the middle of the season, as I got a call from my agent saying I would be sent on loan [to Sunderland] tomorrow, so I had to pack my bag and drive off. I never really got the chance to say goodbye.”

Poom would return to Pride Park almost a year later and in astonishing fashion for a goalkeeper. With Sunderland trailing in stoppage time, manager Mick McCarthy waved him forward for a late corner and, with the ball arriving at the far post as he entered the penalty area, Poom connected with an unstoppable header to level the game.

“It was surreal," he said. "It was an amazing day and an amazing moment in my life. Of course it was a special day for me, being back at Pride Park, and to score an equaliser against your old club – with which you had great memories and relationship with the fans – was unbelievable.

“I didn't want to celebrate, but it was one of those times when all your team-mates want to catch you and jump on your back. At the final whistle the whole stadium gave me a standing ovation and it was a great feeling.”

He returned north after a lap of honour, having gifted his gloves to the Derby faithful, but his new fans were keen to savour the moment too, producing a beer in his honour named Poominator Ale – adorned with his salmon-like leap for the header. He said: “It was called that after a local radio commentator called me 'The Poominator'. The nickname has stuck with me a bit since then. I've still got a couple of bottles!”

Injuries continued to plague his career – he had 13 operations in all – but a loan move to Arsenal materialised and, after a long medical, he signed a six-month deal: “It may have been late in my career, but I was really proud to have got the opportunity to play at a really big club and to be a part of a world-class squad. It was a great experience for me.

“I always felt that I had to work harder, push myself and prove myself every day of being worth of this chance to play in England. I often had coaches say, 'Look Poomy, calm down, you don't need to train so hard'. But that was always my mentality.”

It was arguably this attitude that secured him a permanent contract and, ultimately, a UEFA Champions League runners-up medal: “I still have my medal. I remember that day, the players were all taken to the stadium, but there were only two goalkeepers in the squad for the game. So when [Jens] Lehman got sent off and [Manuel] Almunia came on I thought, 'Bloody hell, it could have been me!'”

Gunning for the final

Gunning for the final
Two teams head into the return legs of the Copa Libertadores semi-finals this week holding a distinct advantage. San Lorenzo, who thrashed Bolivar at home, and Nacional of Paraguay, who built a comfortable advantage against Defensor Sporting, will be looking to capitalise on their first-leg leads and write a new chapter in the history of their clubs. FIFA.com looks ahead to the games.

This week’s fixtures
Semi-final second legs

Tuesday 29 July, 21.15 (local time)
Defensor Sporting (URU) v Nacional (PAR)

Wednesday 30 July, 20.15 (local time)
Bolivar (BOL) v San Lorenzo (ARG)

The stakes
Defensor Sporting v Nacional
Playing in the Estadio Centenario in Montevideo, the Uruguayan outfit will be trying to overturn last week’s 2-0 defeat in Asuncion. Coach Fernando Curutchet was certainly not expecting such a negative result in the Paraguayan capital, and is sure to ring the changes in his starting XI in an attempt to turn the tie around.

The Paraguayan team, meanwhile, will be tenaciously defending the lead from the home leg, with coach Gustavo Morinigo not expected to tinker with a winning line-up, fully aware of what is at stake.

Player to watch
Derlis Orue (Nacional)
The young Paraguayan midfielder is in sparkling form and is one of the top scorers in the Copa Libertadores, having hit the net three times. Brimming with confidence after the first leg, he will doubtless be carefully watched by the Defensor rearguard.

The numbers game
0 – Nacional were unbeaten in the away legs of their Round-of-16 and quarter-final matches in this year’s tournament. In the group phase they lost two and drew one of their three away games.

What they said
“We’re about to play the most important match in the club’s entire history.”
Defensor Sporting midfielder Giorgian De Arrascaeta

“In all honesty I say we haven’t won anything yet. In the next game we have to play just as well or even better if we want to reach the final.”
Nacional coach Gustavo Morinigo

Bolivar v San Lorenzo
The Bolivians will need to forget all about last week's away leg, which ended with a 5-0 rout in Argentina. Spanish coach Xabier Azkargorta says the tactics will be the same but the personnel different ahead of a Herculean task. Bolivar will also be hoping that the 3,600m altitude at which their Hernando Siles stadium is located to can help them achieve a historic comeback.

Despite their emphatic first leg win in Buenos Aires, San Lorenzo will be taking nothing for granted and are expected to field their strongest team. The Argentinian outfit know full well that underestimating their opponents would be a huge mistake as they aim to make their fans’ dreams come true by booking a place in the final for the first time, in La Paz.

Player to watch
Ignacio Piatti (San Lorenzo)
The attacking midfielder is one of coach Edgardo Bauza most trusted lieutenants. The talented goalscorer is a game-changer, and has been a key player in the club’s Copa Libertadores campaign. Soon to leave Argentina to play in the United States, Piatti wants to write his name in the history of the club by winning the famous trophy.

The numbers game
11 – The number of years since Bolivar scored five goals in a Copa Libertadores match, when they beat Penarol 5-2 in La Paz on 25 February 2003.

What they said
“If they (San Lorenzo) scored five, why can’t we do the same? While there’s a chance, we have to go for it.”
Bolivar coach Xabier Azkargorta

“I’m very happy, but I told my players not to go get ahead of themselves because the job is only half done. I know their coach and several of their players, and I know they won’t throw in the towel.”
San Lorenzo coach Edgardo Bauza

I want to prove you wrong this season, Arsenal star warns critics

I want to prove you wrong this season, Arsenal star warns critics
Arsenal star Jack Wilshere has revealed criticism he has received over the last year is inspiring him to make a huge impact at the Emirates this season.

England midfielder Wilshere has struggled for form following a string of injury problems at the Emirates and ex-Man United star Paul Scholes claimed he had not developed since the age of 17.

The duo have since held a clear-the-air conversation, but now the 22-year-old wants to do his talking on the football pitch for the Gunners after returning to pre-season training early.

Wilshere said: "It [criticism] does motivate me to try harder in training and not just in training; it motivates me to improve because a lot of people have started to talk [about me] - people who don't know me but want to have an opinion. Now it is down to me.

"This is a big season for me. I came back early to pre-season to show people my commitment. I am fully committed to the club and to my job and I want to show everyone that.

"Over the past few seasons I've had a few injuries. This season I'm looking to have a really great pre-season and get a really good base of fitness and take that into the season."

Van Gaal: Possession is key

Van Gaal: Possession is key
Louis van Gaal hit out at his players for almost allowing Roma to break his 100 per cent record as Manchester United manager. Van Gaal made it two wins from two as United boss thanks to a 3-2 win over the Italian giants in the Colorado heat.

Unlike in their 7-0 thrashing of the Los Angeles Galaxy, Van Gaal's men were slow off the mark and Roma wasted numerous opportunities to go ahead. Wayne Rooney scored twice and Juan Mata also got on the score sheet with a stunning goal, but Roma fought back in the second half with two strikes - the first of which came from 60 yards.

Van Gaal was annoyed with the way his team failed to close the game out after going 3-0 up, but he thinks the fact that the game took place in 30 degree heat, some 5280 feet above sea level, did not help his players. "I think we don't play a good match," Van Gaal said. "All my good passers failed today. I think it was because of the height and the air.

"Mata, (Ander) Herrera and (Shinji) Kagawa these are the best passers (at the club), and everything went wrong. In the second half we forgot to keep the ball. When you are 3-0 ahead the only thing you have to do is keep the ball in possession and the opponent has to run and run and run. We forgot to do that. We brought Roma by ourselves back into the match so I am pleased we have won, but it was not good."

Rooney collected the ball from Mata and curled a stunning shot over Lukasz Skorupski from 25 yards to put United ahead. The England striker then returned the favour, firing a 45-yard ball over the Roma defence to Mata, who killed the ball with his first touch before superbly lifting it over Skorupski.

A clumsy foul by Mehdi Benatia on Danny Welbeck allowed Rooney to add his second from the penalty spot. Van Gaal was reluctant to single anyone out for praise, but he could not hide his admiration for Rooney's performance. "The pass of Rooney to Mata was unbelievable," said Van Gaal, who withdrew the England striker, along with eight others at half-time.

Van Gaal was not so happy with Amos for letting in Pjanic's 60-yard shot. Pjanic spotted Amos well off his line in the second half and punted a looping shot over the 24-year-old goalkeeper. When asked whether he regarded the goal as a wonder strike by Pjanic or an error on the part of his substitute, Van Gaal said with a smile: "What do you think? I am nearly 63. When the ball is flying in the air for four seconds, I think I run 50 metres."

Roma coach Rudi Garcia was stunned by the 60-yard effort. "It was a world-class goal," he said. "I am sure we will see it throughout (the) world. He probably had a training session yesterday with the Denver Broncos."

Van Gaal, meanwhile, played down suggestions that he does not see Wilfried Zaha as part of his first-team plans. Zaha is the only player in Van Gaal's 26-man squad not to feature in this tour of the USA. But the former Netherlands boss says he has no issues with the forward, who was loaned to Cardiff last January, just six months after joining United from Crystal Palace in a £15m transfer.

"I have a lot of players in (his) position," Van Gaal added. "Our squad is not balanced. "Maybe Zaha will be picked because he is working good and hard, and is doing all I require and demand. There is no problem (with him)."

Van Gaal and his squad fly to Washington DC on Sunday ahead of their next match in the International Champions Cup against Inter Milan, which takes place on Tuesday.

Arsenal seal Ospina signing

Arsenal seal Ospina signing
Arsenal have announced the signing of Colombia goalkeeper David Ospina from Nice on a long-term contract. The 25-year-old, who impressed as Colombia reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup Brazil™, has moved to the Emirates Stadium for an undisclosed fee.

Gunners manager Arsene Wenger told Arsenal's official website: "David Ospina is an excellent goalkeeper, with good experience and a proven record of performing with Nice and Colombia. He will add strength to our squad and we are very pleased that he will be joining us."

The keeper is expected to make his first appearance for Arsenal during the Emirates Cup friendly tournament, which takes place in north London next weekend. Ospina made 189 Ligue 1 appearances over six years with Nice having joined the south coast club from Colombian club Atletico Nacional in 2008.

He made his senior debut for Atletico aged just 17 and has been a full Colombia international since 2007, making his first start for Los Cafeteros in a 2010 FIFA World Cup qualification match against Bolivia. At Arsenal he will provide competition for first-choice keeper Wojciech Szczesny while helping to fill the gap left by the departed Lukasz Fabianski, who has joined Swansea.

Nice coach Claude Puel on Saturday night confirmed Ospina's move to London had been ratified and told Gunners fans they could expect some "quality" displays from the new signing. Speaking to Sky Sports News after Nice's friendly defeat to Brentford, Puel said: "It's confirmed, yes.

"It's a good affair for Arsenal because he's a very good player. You will see next season the quality of this player. It's fantastic for him. It's important for him to try another league, another club and Arsenal is a fantastic club for him.

"David Ospina can take the goalkeeping position at Arsenal because his qualities are very strong and... 'magnifique'. You saw in the World Cup how important a goalkeeper he is. For me, David can impose his quality, he's a goalkeeper who is very good with the feet, with his arms, he knows football and he's a very, very good player."

Crystal Palace beat Leicester to Campbell capture

Crystal Palace beat Leicester to Campbell capture

Crystal Palace have announced the signing of Cardiff striker Fraizer Campbell.

Cardiff accepted two bids from the Premier League for the 26-year-old, with Palace and newly promoted side Leicester City both triggering his release clause - thought to be around £900,000.

And the frontman decided to pen a three-year deal with the London-based Eagles, bringing his 18-month stay in Wales to a close.

Campbell came through the youth ranks at Manchester United at the start of his career, but made his professional debut with Belgian side Royal Antwerp while on loan from Old Trafford during the 2006/07 season.

That stint was a success, as was a spell with Hull the following term, and he subsequently spent time on loan with Tottenham before departing United - for whom he had made a total of just four appearances - to join Sunderland in 2009.

In January 2013 he switched to Cardiff and helped them win the Championship title that season - one in which Palace were also promoted, via the play-offs.

But he could not prevent the Welsh outfit from making a swift return to the second tier, with them finishing bottom of the Barclays Premier League in 2013/14.

He arrives at Palace, who came 11th last term, having netted 16 goals in 52 appearances in all competitions for the Bluebirds.

Man United transfer blow! Roma boss rules out Strootman exit

Man United transfer blow! Roma boss rules out Strootman exit
Manchester have received a blow in their pursuit of Holland international Kevin Strootman, with Roma manager Rudi Garcia ruling out an exit for the Dutchman this summer.

The Red Devils are understood to retain an interest in Strootman and reports in Italy claim the 20-time English champions have bid at least £30million for the highly-rated Netherlands international

New United manager Louis van Gaal knows Strootman well from his time as Holland coach.

However, Van Gaal had to do without the midfielder at the World Cup as he suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury in March.

United would need to see the player, who moved to Roma from PSV Eindhoven last summer, had made a full recovery before launching any bid.

But Garcia insists the 24-year-old is going nowhere during the transfer window.

"Strootman is a Roma player. He will be a Roma player this year. There is no doubt about that," Garcia said on the eve of Roma's friendly against United in Denver, USA.

"Only he can say whether he wants to stay but it was never an issue for him to go to another club. There is no question of it.

Strootman is currently training in Boston, where Roma played Liverpool earlier this week, and will therefore not turn out against United on Saturday in Colorado.

"Strootman is following a normal recovery programme, he has stayed in Boston to work with our physios," Garcia added. "He will start running any time soon."

Drogba will have bit-part role for Chelsea this season, claims Walker

Former Chelsea winger Clive Walker believes returning Blues legend Didier Drogba will have to settle for the role of ‘super-sub’ at Stamford Bridge this season.

Drogba sealed a dramatic south west London homecoming on Friday, signing a one-year deal for the side he fired to Champions League glory in 2012.

The 36-year-old netted 157 goals in 341 appearances during his eight-year initial stay at Stamford Bridge, and the frontman was named Chelsea’s greatest ever player in a poll of fans following his exit.

And while Walker admits Drogba may find his playing time reduced, with £32million summer signing Diego Costa likely to be Jose Mourinho’s favoured sole striker, the ex-Blues man believes he could still have a big impact at the club this term.

“Drogba was a fantastic scorer and a great talisman for the club for eight years, but I don’t think you can look back on that now, it’s a new period in his career,” he told Kick Off.

“It will remain to be seen if he starts many games next season, it will all depend on the fitness of Diego Costa, Fernando Torres and possibly Romelu Lukaku as well.

“But his own fitness will be a big factor. At 36, can he still produce at that level for 90 minutes?

"I think we can all agree that Drogba won’t be a starting player for Chelsea this season, but my initial feeling is, what a man to bring on with 20 minutes to go!

“He will give a huge boost to the team and the fans, he’ll lift the whole of Stamford Bridge when he enters the field.

“He’ll certainly still be a danger, there’s no doubt about that. If he’s in the penalty area and you put the balls in the box he will score goals. He’s still a gamechanger.

“He’s got that love for the football club, which will give him a huge lift and I’m sure he can raise his game to the necessary level to play for a club like Chelsea again.”

Liverpool injury blow! Lallana to miss start of season with knee problem

Liverpool injury blow! Lallana to miss start of season with knee problem
Liverpool have confirmed summer signing Adam Lallana is set to miss the start of the new Premier League season after limping out of training on Friday.

The 26-year-old, who secured a £26million to Anfield earlier this month, suffered knee ligament damage during a session at the club’s training base in Boston, as the Reds continue their pre-season tour of the United States.

The Merseyside outfit have offered no timeframe on the midfielder’s likely return to fitness, though such injuries can result in a spell of anywhere up to six weeks on the sidelines.

Liverpool did at least confirm Lallana’s injury does not require surgery, following an assessment carried out by club medical staff.

However, the news is clearly a setback for the England international, who will undergo further assessment in America and on his return to Liverpool.

The injury means the former Southampton captain will almost certainly miss Liverpool’s opening game of the campaign against his old club at Anfield.

Van Gaal Vows To Stick With 3-5-2 System After Man United Reign Gets Off To Stunning Start

Louis van Gaal vows to stick with attacking 3-5-2 system as Manchester United reign gets off to stunning start
Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal hailed his players as ‘fantastic’ after they demolished MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in their opening pre-season friendly.

United thrashed the Galaxy 7-0 in the Pasadena Rose Bowl in California, with summer signing Ander Herrera producing a sparkling performance in his first appearance in a Red Devils shirt, to get Van Gaal's reign off to a flyer.

It was a result which took Van Gaal by surprise, and he believes it will give his squad a big confidence boost ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

"The result always matters. With such a result you get confidence," the new United boss said.

"It is fantastic how they have performed today. When you see us train, you can expect something but not 7-0. It was a surprise, but they were beautiful goals and beautiful attacks."

Van Gaal sent United out in the 3-5-2 system which he used to great effect with the Netherlands at the World Cup.

And the Dutchman has vowed to stick with that attacking formation.

"We introduced a new system that we have only played two times on the training pitch 11 v 11. But the boys are willing to pick up the information," he said.

"It is fantastic how they have performed. Last week, 10 players who played tonight were not even in our training complex.

"When you want to change a system, you must start at once. We don't have time to prepare for other things. The other system they can play is 4-3-3 and they have played it for many years.

"I can change back if the system doesn't work. With the quality of the players we have, I can play 4-3-3 with three strikers on the bench, but I want to play with two strikers.

Van Gaal's predecessor David Moyes usually played 4-2-3-1 as his squad was awash with players who like to play just behind a main striker.

Van Gaal believes the Scot left him with an "unbalanced" squad.

He said: "We have four number 10s, so the selection is not balanced in my eyes.

"I have decided to play this system because of the quality of the players. But if we lose, I can change back to another system."

Galaxy coach Bruce Arena thinks Van Gaal's introduction has sharpened the United squad up following their seventh-place finish last year.

"I have nothing but the greatest respect for the show that Manchester United put on," he said.

"A bunch of guys out there fighting for jobs and it looked that way. It was a real lesson for a lot of our players."

Is this why Man United must increase their bid for World Cup winner? [SEE VIDEO]

Manchester United’s hopes of landing Borussia Dortmund defender Mats Hummels were left in tatters on Tuesday as Jurgen Klopp mocked their reported €20million offer for the defender.

The Red Devils are yet to make an official move for Germany’s World Cup winning centre-back, who scored twice during the tournament in Brazil.

But the rumours have still reached Klopp, who was less than happy to hear about the amount Man United are willing to pay.

And it’s understandable why he would think the bid derisory when you consider the talents of the 25-year-old, who has won the Bundesliga twice.

Hummels has been a mainstay of the Dortmund defence for five seasons in the Bundesliga as they’ve risen to the top again in Germany.

When it comes to tackling he’s blessed with exceptional timing and on the ball he isn’t afraid to stride forward and ping a delectable 40-yard pass to a team-mate, plus he’s pretty handy in the air

Brazil Legend Named New Manager

Brazil legend named new manager
Brazil legend Dunga has been named the Selecao’s new manager following Luiz Felipe Scolari's resignation.

‘Big Phil’ stepped down after his side's home World Cup ended in humiliation, crashing out in the semi-finals with a crushing 7-1 defeat to eventual winners Germany, with the hosts eventually finishing in fourth place after a 3-0 loss to Holland in the third-place play-off.

And 1994 World Cup-winning captain Dunga has now returned to the hotseat following an announcement on Tuesday afternoon, having already managed the side from 2006 to 2010.

He led the five-time world champions to the 2007 Copa America and 2009 Confederations Cup crowns, and guided Brazil to the 2010 World Cup quarter-finals, but was sacked shortly after the competition.

Dunga launched his second spell at the helm with an attempt at dampening expectations of the national side by stressing that Brazil always have a target on their backs.

"I'm very happy for the opportunity the CBF (Brazil Football Confederation) have given me. We need to stop thinking we're the best and work harder," Dunga said.

"Before the World Cup happens we sell to the public the idea we're going to win, but we don't know if we'll win.

"We need to be more modest. It's important to compromise because our opponents always want to beat us because we're Brazil.

"The Brazilian shirt is very respected, but everyone wants to beat us. We have to be prepared for that.

"We can't think that we'll pull on the Brazilian shirt and win the World Cup before it's even started.

"Nothing happens before the game starts. The most important thing is what happens during the 90 minutes on the pitch because that's when you win or lose."

Stoke Announce Capture Of Barcelona Ace

Stoke announcing capture of Barcelona ace
Stoke have secured the signing of Spanish forward Bojan from Barcelona.

Reports from Spain this week suggested the 23-year-old was nearing a loan switch to the Britannia Stadium, having endured stints at Ajax and AC Milan in recent years.

But the Premier League outfit have announced for former Barca No.9 has instead signed a four-year contract with the Potters for an undisclosed fee, and will now join his new team-mates for their pre-season training camp in Germany.

Bojan's prolific form for the Catalan club's youth side saw the youngster hailed as a future Spain star, and was mainstay of the La Liga giants’ first team ever since his debut as a 17-year-old in 2007.

But his career faltered following his £10million move to Roma in 2011, and he then struggled to make an impression at Barca after re-signing last summer following two years in Italy.

And the frontman will now get the chance to prove himself in the English top flight under former Barcelona star Mark Hughes.

The Potters boss said: "Anyone who knows European football will be aware of him as a player and the fact that he sees his future at Stoke City is really exciting and an endorsement of the Club itself.

"He's desperate to prove himself in the Premier League and we're pleased to be able to offer him that platform.

"The time he spends with the squad in Germany will help him settle in and will give myself and the coaches the chance to take a good look at him."

Club chief executive Tony Scholes also added: "We are delighted to have signed such a richly talented and exciting player, who is still only 23.

"A number of other clubs had expressed an interest in him but Bojan believes joining Stoke City will benefit his career and we have no doubts he will prove to be a wonderful addition to our squad.

"The signing of Bojan, along with the other players we have recruited ahead of the new season, underlines the progress we are making as a Club."

Bojan become's Stoke's fifth summer signing, following the arrivals of Mame Biram Diouf, Steve Sidwell, Phil Bardsley and Dionatan Teixeira.

Boost for Arsenal and Liverpool as Marseille star's Agent Rubbish Dinamo Link

Arsenal and Liverpool are still in the race to sign Mathieu Valbuena after the player's agent rubbished talk of a move to Dynamo Moscow.

It had been reported that the France international would seal a £5.5million move to Moscow this week, however sources in Marseille deny the presence of such a deal.

Instead Valbuena's agent, Jean-Pierre Bernes, has distanced his player from a move to Russia.

Speaking about the move to Moscow, Bernes told French website Le Phoceen: "That's bull****".

Valbuena starred for France at this summer's World Cup and the news that he is still available will come as a boost to a host of Premier League clubs.

Fear Not Arsenal Fans! Here's FOUR alternative Signings To Remy

Loic Remy and Arsenal were meant to be. It was always thought the French striker would head to the Emirates, particularly when he was spotted in the stands at the Gunners’ last home game of the season. But somehow it appears he is now on his way to Liverpool for £8.5m instead.

It’s fair to say Gooners are used to Arsene Wenger’s dithering in the transfer market in recent seasons, but this one left a particularly sore mark as they always felt the QPR forward was bound to move to north London.

Remy has history of doing the unexpected – QPR signed him from right under the noses of Newcastle, who thought they had a deal tied up – but while Arsenal fans are unimpressed by their failure to land the France international it should not be all doom and gloom.

Wenger has since said he is not looking for new strikers but with plenty of time left in the transfer market, he could yet change his mind and as these players prove, there are still options out there for the Gunners.

Mario Balotelli (AC Milan) – Click the arrows to view more strikers
Mario Balotelli (AC Milan)
The difficult Italian striker is well known on these shores and Arsenal have been linked with a move for his services all summer. The Italy international – England’s scourge in their World Cup match – is thought to be available for £15.8million and while almost double the fee Liverpool are paying for Remy, he is younger and is considered more of an explosive star, both on and off the pitch.

Jackson Martinez (Porto) – Click the arrows to view more strikers
Jackson Martinez (Porto)
The Colombian has gone goal crazy in Portugal, netting 60 times in 91 games for Porto and has already admitted he would love a move to Arsenal – the club he has supported all his life. The Gunners are understood to have held discussions with the 25-year-old but that was prior to Alexis Sanchez’s arrival and since then things have gone a tad quiet. Martinez has made it known he would happily accept a move to the Emirates but it will take £35m to prise him away from Estadio do Dragao.

Wilfried Bony (Swansea) – Click the arrows to view more strikers
Wilfried Bony (Swansea)
Liverpool and Arsenal have competed for various players this summer. Alexis Sanchez chose the Gunners, while it seems as though Remy has opted for the Reds. Bony is another player both have cast their eye over, with the Merseyside club reportedly agreeing terms for the Ivory Coast international but failing to meet Swansea’s £20m valuation. Brendan Rodgers’ decision to bring Remy to Anfield indicates he is no longer interested in the Jacks' forward and with the striker making it obvious he wants a move to a ‘top six’ club, Arsenal could benefit from Liverpool’s failure to bring in the 25-year-old, who scored 25 goals in his debut season on English soil.

Javier Hernandez (Manchester United)
Javier Hernandez (Manchester United)
The Red Devils forward has proven since moving to Old Trafford in 2010 that he has an eye for goal. A natural poacher, he is quite possibly the exact type of player Arsenal are crying out for. Currently he is one of six United players who are thought to be having their futures assessed by new boss Louis van Gaal. But should the Dutchman conclude his time is up, then Arsene Wenger should act quickly to snap up the Mexico international for what is likely to be only £7m.

Done deall! Aspas leaves Liverpool for Sevilla loan spell

Done deall! Iago Aspas leaves Liverpool for Sevilla loan spell
Liverpool flop Iago Aspas has joined Sevilla on a season-long loan.

Aspas arrived from Celta Vigo for £7.2m last summer and was immediately handed the No.9 shirt at Anfield.

But he endured a nightmare season on Merseyside, starting just six games and scoring only once - against Oldham in the Fa Cup.

Sevilla offered him an escape route and he was delighted to join them on loan for the coming campaign.

'We don't need him, Jose!' Chelsea fans react to transfer rumour

Didier Drogba may return to Chelsea
Didier Drogba is currently a free agent after ending his stint at Galatasaray.

That has opened the door for a return to Chelsea where he is loved by the fans. Manager Jose Mourinho signed him from Marseille in 2004 and now that Demba Ba's exit has freed up a space in the squad, Drogba could sign.

The 36-year-old left in 2012 after his penalty clinched Chelsea the Champions League trophy in a shoot-out win against Bayern and apparently the striker will be given a coaching role when he retires from playing if he makes a return to south west London.

However, there was a mixed reaction on Twitter from Blues fans, with some delighted and some preferring that his final contribution in a Chelsea shirt remain as that spot-kick in Munich.

Tottenham Transfer News: Spurs to land Serie A striker?

Tottenham could be in the process of luring Roma forward Mattia Destro to White Hart Lane, according to reports in Italy. The striker was previously considered not for sale by Rudi Garcia, but Sport Mediaset say the purchase of Juan Iturbe has changed Destro’s position in the squad, meaning the Serie A side are more open to Tottenham’s advances. talkSPORT’s Transfer Spotlight has the details...

Name: Mattia Destro
Date of birth: 20 March, 1991
Birthplace: Ascoli Piceno, Italy
Position: Striker
Club: AS Roma
International appearances: 5 (Italy)

What’s the latest?
Italian outlet Sport Mediaset say the arrival of Juan Iturbe in Rome means Destro will no longer be a regular starter for Roma next season, and that could mean the club consider the enquiries they have had for the forward this summer. Along with Tottenham, Bundesliga side Wolfsburg are also said to be interested.

Did you know?

Video evidence below

1) Destro joined the Inter academy in 2005, winning several honours at youth level and standing out from his peers. In 2010, Genoa signed him in a loan deal with the option to buy, and in September of that year he made both his Serie A debut and goal debut against Chievo.

2) At the end of the 2011/12 season Destro was loaned out to Siena, where he would go on to score regularly for the first time in his senior career, producing 13 goals in 32 appearances for the humble Tuscan side. In the summer of 2012 he was on the move again, this time to AS Roma.

3) The 2012/13 campaign proved to be a memorable one for the forward, with five goals in five Coppa Italia games – including three against boyhood club Inter – making him the top scorer in the competition.

4) Last season saw Destro continue to find the net against the tougher sides in Serie A, with goals against Fiorentina and AC Milan in the league. The striker scored his first league hat-trick in a 3-1 win over Cagliari on April 6, 2014.

5) Destro was a regular for Italy at youth level, playing in the U17, U19 and U21 sides. Though he made the initial 32-man list for the seniors ahead of Euro 2012, he missed the final cut, but was soon rewarded with his debut in August of that year, playing against England at Wembley. His first Italy goal came in a 2014 World Cup qualifier against Malta in September 2012.

They say
“Destro is no longer non-transferable. It’s a delicate issue at Roma, given the good things he has done as Rudi Garcia’s striker. Something has changed in the last few days however, perhaps to do with the purchase of Iturbe who, with Gervinho and Totti, will form the trident set to assault Juventus. There has been strong pressure from abroad regarding Destro. First Wolfsburg, then Tottenham. Offers that were made to the player and the club were rejected, but something is changing, with doubts about his immediate future.” Sport Mediaset on Destro.
