Rafael Benitez: Real Madrid Chief Suggests Appointment Close

Rafael Benitez

A Real Madrid vice-president has given the strongest indication yet that Rafael Benitez is to be appointed head coach at the Spanish club.

Benitez, who steps down as Napoli boss after Sunday's last game of the season, is expected to replace Carlo Ancelotti.

Speaking at a Madrid fans' meeting on Saturday, Eduardo Fernandez de Bla said: "Carlo Ancelotti is a phenomenon.

"He was the best coach in the world, just as Jose Mourinho was two years ago and, from this week, Benitez will be."

Madrid sacked Ancelotti after he only won the Club World Cup this year, despite the Italian having led the club to a 10th European Cup and the Copa del Rey last term.

Chelsea boss Mourinho was sacked by Real in 2013 after winning one league title and one Spanish Cup during three seasons in charge.

Spaniard Benitez, 55, led Liverpool to the Champions League title in 2005 and won the Europa League with Chelsea in 2013 before joining Serie A club Napoli, where he won the Coppa Italia in 2014.

Victory against Lazio in Naples on Sunday would see Napoli leapfrog their opponents into third and Serie A's final Champions League qualification spot.

Benitez also won two La Liga titles and the Uefa Cup with Valencia between 2001 and 2004, and coached Madrid's reserve side from 1993 to 1995.

Did Theo Walcott Just Solve Arsenal's Long-Standing Striker Problem?

Arsenal beats Aston Villa 4-0 to defend FA Cup title

It’s been years since fans and pundits were content with Arsenal’s striker situation.

Arsene Wenger has been a different story.

The Arsenal manager has either staunchly defended or publicly criticized his strikers over the past couple seasons, but he hasn’t made a huge splash in the transfer market to fix the problem.

In any case, Theo Walcott may have just provided a solution.

Walcott scored the first goal of Arsenal’s 4-0 outclassing of Aston Villa in the FA Cup final on Saturday, a gorgeous left-footed half-volley that was born out of determination. There was a spring in his step all afternoon, understandably so after his hat trick last weekend against West Brom in the final Premier League fixture of the season.

His last two seasons have been ransacked by injuries, and Walcott’s apparent brittleness cannot be ignored. An abdominal injury suffered in August 2013 kept him on the sideline for three months, and a few weeks later, he ruptured his left ACL and didn’t return to action until this past November. His injury history before these setbacks wasn’t exactly spotless, either.

Still only 26 years old, Walcott spent most of this season on the bench, lost in Arsenal’s crowd of smaller but pacey attacking options. He’s made the most of his starts, however, and after his showing on Saturday, perhaps Wenger should give strong consideration to similar tactics next season.

As a veritable false nine, Walcott played slightly above the potent duo of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil but was allowed to roam across the front line where he saw fit. He generated chances and was a constant threat to the Aston Villa goal.

Villa countered by trying to use its size and physicality to push around this smaller lineup. While the strategy failed, there’s no doubt other Premier League teams are better equipped to bruise the Gunners’ attack.

Still, this approach diminishes Walcott’s injury risk, and thoughts of Walcott and his teammates running circles around the leaden-footed center halves of the Premier League has to entice Arsenal fans. The squad’s inability to break down defenses at home this season proved costly against the league’s elite, as Chelsea and Manchester City both earned a point at the Emirates while Manchester United won outright with a severely depleted side in November. Another win or two, combined with Wenger’s renewed pragmatism away from home, might have made the league title race a bit more interesting.

Perhaps the best argument for Walcott’s deployment is that Wenger seems unlikely to bring in a world-class striker in the summer. Wenger did spend £16 million on Welbeck last September, but that’s a far cry from the £32 million Chelsea spent on Diego Costa, or the £48.6 million Barcelona spent on Neymar, or even the £40,000,001 Wenger bid just to activate talks with Luis Suarez before the Uruguayan star made his way to Barcelona for almost twice that amount.

Wenger offered a reminder of his transfer tenets recently. After years of loan spells and development within the club, Francis Coquelin has emerged to fill a glaring hole at defensive midfielder for the Gunners, providing courage and steel in the center of the pitch.

Coquelin wasn’t a flashy summer signing. He was just a member of the squad who found new life.

“I am sorry he didn’t cost any money,” Wenger said. “He is still a good player.”

Could this apply to Walcott next?

The Football Association Challenge Cup, known worldwide as the FA Cup, is an annual knockout cup competition in English football; it is the oldest association football competition in the world.[1] The FA Cup is organised by and named after the Football Association. A concurrent women's tournament is also held, known as the FA Women's Cup.
The FA Cup was first held in 1871–72. Entry is open to all teams who compete in the Premier League, the Football League and in Steps 1 to 5 of the FA National League System, as well as selected teams in Step 6.[2] This means that clubs of all standards compete, from the largest clubs in England and Wales down to amateur village teams. The tournament has become known for the possibility for "minnows" from the lower divisions to become "giant-killers" by eliminating top clubs from the tournament and even theoretically winning the Cup, although lower division teams rarely progress beyond the early stages. The qualification rounds and a system of byes mean that the very smallest and very biggest teams almost never meet.

Arsenal are the current holders, having beaten Hull City 3–2 after extra time in the 2014 final. Their 11th FA Cup title, this brought Arsenal level with Manchester United for the greatest number of title victories in the history of the competition.

The record for most wins of the tournament by a club is 11, held jointly by Arsenal and Manchester United.
Three clubs have won consecutive FA Cups on more than one occasion: Wanderers (1872, 1873 and 1876, 1877, 1878), Blackburn Rovers (1884, 1885, 1886 and 1890, 1891), and Tottenham Hotspur (1961, 1962 and 1981, 1982).
Seven clubs have won the FA Cup as part of a League and Cup double, namely Preston North End (1889), Aston Villa (1897), Tottenham Hotspur (1961), Arsenal (1971, 1998, 2002), Liverpool (1986), Manchester United (1994, 1996, 1999) and Chelsea (2010).

Ashley Cole has won a record seven FA Cup Finals
In 1993, Arsenal became the first side to win both the FA Cup and the League Cup in the same season when they beat Sheffield Wednesday 2–1 in both finals. Liverpool (in 2001) and Chelsea (in 2007) have since repeated this feat. In 2012, Chelsea accomplished a different cup double consisting of the FA Cup and the 2012 Champions League. In 1998–99, Manchester United added the 1999 Champions League title to their league and cup double to complete a unique Treble. Two years later, in 2000–01, Liverpool won the FA Cup, League Cup and UEFA Cup to complete a cup treble.
Portsmouth have the curious accolade of holding the FA Cup for the longest unbroken period of time; having won the Cup in 1939, the next final was not contested until 1946, due to the outbreak of the Second World War.
The FA Cup has only been won by a non-English team once. Cardiff City achieved this in 1927 when they beat Arsenal in the final at Wembley. They had previously made it to the final only to lose to Sheffield United in 1925 and lost another final to Portsmouth in 2008. Cardiff City is also the only team to win the national cups of two different countries in the same season, having also won the Welsh Cup in 1927. The Scottish team Queen's Park reached and lost the final in both 1884 and 1885.
Ashley Cole holds the record for most FA Cup winner's medals, with seven: three for Arsenal (2002, 2003 and 2005) and four for Chelsea (2007, 2009, 2010 and 2012).[35]
Winners from outside the top division[edit]
Since the foundation of the Football League, Tottenham Hotspur in 1901 have been the only non-league winners of the FA Cup. They were then playing in the Southern League and were elected to the Football League only in 1908. At that time the Football League consisted of two 18-team divisions.
In the history of the FA Cup, only eight teams who were playing outside the top level of English football have gone on to win the competition, the most recent being West Ham United, who beat Arsenal in 1980. With the exception of Tottenham in 1901, these clubs were all playing in the old Second Division. No other Third Division or lower side has won the trophy or even reached the final since the Football League was founded.
One of the most notable upsets in the final occurred when Sunderland beat Leeds United 1–0 in 1973. That season, Leeds finished third in the First Division, while Sunderland were in the Second Division.[36] Three years later, Second Division Southampton also won the Cup, when they beat First Division Manchester United by the same 1–0 scoreline. The other Second Division winners of the FA Cup are Notts County in 1894; Wolverhampton Wanderers in 1908; Barnsley in 1912; and West Bromwich Albion in 1931. West Bromwich Albion are the only team to have won the FA Cup and promotion from the Second Division in the same season.
The FA Cup final has never been contested by two teams from outside the top division. Uniquely, in 2007–08 three of the four semi-finalists (Barnsley, Cardiff City and West Bromwich Albion), were from outside the top division, although the single Premier League team remaining, Portsmouth, went on to win the competition that year.[37]

Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger ‘Very Proud’ After Making History With Sixth FA Cup Win

Aston Villa have not won the FA Cup since 1957
Arsene Wenger was “very proud” to have his name written in English football history books after guiding Arsenal to another FA Cup title in emphatic style.

The Gunners ran riot against a dreadful Aston Villa side, as goals from Theo Walcott, Alexis Sanchez, Per Mertesacker and Olivier Giroud sealed an utterly dominant 4-0 victory.

It was a record breaking day for the north Londoners, who claimed the 12th FA Cup win in their history, as well as their manager, who claimed his sixth as Gunners boss – moving level with legendary Villa manager George Ramsey.

“I’m very proud to make history in English football,” said the Frenchman.
“Where I come from you can never dream of that as a kid. I’m very proud and happy because it’s a competition I love and today it’s another example of how great the game is here.

“This game was created in England and you could see that today; before, during and after the game.”

'Football Has Lost' - Figo Hits Out At Blatter Re-Election

'Football has lost' - Figo hits out at Blatter re-election
Luis Figo says "football has lost" after Sepp Blatter was re-elected as Fifa president on Friday and again called for him to quit his post.

The 79-year-old beat off competition from Jordan's Prince Ali to hold on to his position, which will see him serve a fifth term as the head of the game's governing body.

Blatter polled 133 votes to his rival's 73, which would have been enough to take the contest into a second round of voting, but Ali opted to withdraw.

His victory comes as Fifa is embroiled in a major investigation that began earlier this week, which saw US authorities make seven arrests and charge 14 senior executives on suspicion of bribery and corruption.

Figo - who originally intended to run for presidency before withdrawing in a bid not to split the vote and aid Blatter's campaign - said he was devastated by the result.

"Today was another dark day in Zurich," said the Portugal legend. "Fifa has lost, but above everything, football has lost and everyone who truly cares about it has lost too.

"Mr. Blatter had a very cynical reaction when he said that he couldn't control everyone. It offends everyone's intelligence. These persons, whom Mr. Blatter has promoted through years, turned, with him, Fifa in to a decadent organisation.

"If Mr. Blatter were minimally concerned about football, he would have given up of the re-election. If he has a minimal of decency, he will resign in the next few days."

Arteta Hints At Arsenal Contract Extension Despite Limited Influence

Arteta hints at Arsenal contract extension despite limited influence
Mikel Arteta insists that he intends to remain at Arsenal despite the emergence of Francis Coquelin and his limited game-time at the Emirates Stadium.

Arteta, the Gunners' captain heading into Saturday's FA Cup final against Aston Villa, has made just 12 senior appearances for the club in 2014-15, with injuries limiting his influence on the team.

The Spaniard last appeared for Arsenal in the Premier League in the 2-1 loss to Manchester United on November 22 and says that he has enjoyed having an "input from outside" despite his troubles.

And the 33-year-old has hinted that he is set to sign a contract extension after this weekend's clash with Aston Villa.

"I will discuss my future after the final, it's been a strange season for me since November, with my injury," he told reporters at the club's London Colney training headquarters.

"I had some really tough times. But I have learned a lot. My aim is to be on the pitch as much as I can.

"I would love to stay. The indication is we are both very clear on what we want and we will announce something after the final."

Coquelin has enjoyed a stunning rise since he returned from his loan spell at Charlton Athletic in December, with Arteta full of praise for his young team-mate.

"I think it was probably the nicest surprise of the season because he had to go on loan and I don't think he was really happy to do that," he added.

"But he put a really good impact to it, the way he adapted to the game and the way he gave something to the team that we were missing. He was great, he's given balance, he has competed as well as anybody else in the team, and he's been really consistent. He will be here for a good few years.

"I've always liked Francis and I like him a lot now."

Aaron Ramsey has previously outlined his desire to see Arsenal win the Premier League title next season and Arteta echoed the Welshman's sentiments, though he says that investment this summer is necessary as the club "missed something" in 2014-15.

"We want to push and win the Premier League, that's for sure, and it's up to the manager and board to decide what's the missing ingredient," he said.

"There's something we missed, whether it's that we didn't have the full squad ready for the biggest part of the season, with a lot of players out, whether we were missing that final bit of quality to win it or deepness in the squad, I don't know what it is, it's up to them to analyse that.

"Everybody's up for it and I'm sure they are as well."

Wenger: Arsenal Will Not Sell Wilshere

Wenger: Arsenal will not sell Wilshere
Arsene Wenger has dismissed talk of Arsenal selling Jack Wilshere and hinted at a possible contract extension.

The midfielder recently made his return after yet another injury setback, which has restricted the 23-year-old to just 13 Premier League appearances this season.

In his absence, Santi Cazorla and Aaron Ramsey have shone in midfield has while Francis Coquelin established himself in the first team, with Wilshere recently admitting he is yet to discuss his future with his manager.

Wenger, though, insists he has never entertained the idea of selling Wilshere and is not about to start, pointing to the loyalty shown by the club during the England international's many injury troubles.

"I made Jack Wilshere start at 17 years of age," Wenger told reporters. "That means that you cannot show a bigger desire of wanting a player.

"We have always extended his contract and we have been very patient with all his injuries. At some stage I think he must feel wanted.

"We always stood by him through every difficult moment. Does that mean we want him to stay here for a longer period? Yes, as we would like to benefit from his talent now."

Di Maria Has Flopped But Manchester United Can't Afford To Lose Him - Scholes

Di Maria has flopped but Manchester United can't afford to lose him - Scholes
The British-record signing has not scored a Premier League goal since October in a tough first season in England, but the former midfielder is confident he will come good

Paul Scholes acknowledges Angel Di Maria's first season in the Premier League has been a "disappointment", but insists Manchester United should keep faith with him.

The Argentine joined from Real Madrid last summer for a British-record fee of €83.4 million, scoring three goals and assisting a further six in his first 10 games, but failed to score again in the league all season.

Scholes has sympathy for Di Maria amid reports of struggles to settle into life in England, but feels United cannot afford to sell a player of his ability after securing a return to the Champions League after a year out.

"A good start but, for €83.4m, the hope was that he would give United much more," he wrote in The Independent.

"I accept he has had problems off the pitch settling into life in Manchester, but there is no way he can see the season as anything other than a disappointment.

"This was, after all, the best player in last season's Champions League final.

"Nevertheless, the quality is there and I don't think United can afford to lose him. They need that kind of player if they are to compete in the Champions League. Let's see what next season brings.

Juve Need To Be Better Than Perfect To Beat Barca - Tevez

Juve need to be better than perfect to beat Barca - Tevez
Carlos Tevez fears Juventus will need to be "better than perfect" to beat Barcelona, whom he thinks they have the best strikeforce in football.

The Scudetto winners face a Barca side boasting Lionel Messi, Neymar and Luis Suarez as a front three in the Champions League final on June 6.

The trio have scored over 100 goals between them in all competitions this season and Tevez acknowledged the devastating threat they will pose to Massimiliano Allegri's backline.

The forward told SportMediaset: "I think they are the best team in the world. They have the three best strikers, so we’ll have to work hard to give a performance which is more than perfect."

Tevez also dismissed the significance of him facing Argentina team-mate Messi, who he thinks has bigger fish to fry than worrying about tackling the ex-Manchester United man.

"I think Messi will be focused on the game, not on playing against me," he added. "We’re team-mates for the national team, but I want to win the Champions League too, playing against him isn’t the priority."

Tevez has enjoyed one of the most prolific seasons of his career, scoring 29 goals in all competitions to help fire the club to the European final and seal Serie A and Coppa Italia glory.

One Touch, One Goal - Meet The New Cristiano Ronaldo

One touch, one goal - meet the new Cristiano Ronaldo
Sixty-one goals in 54 games represents a career-best return for Cristiano Ronaldo. The Real Madrid forward scored goals galore in 2014-15 to better his 60 strikes from 55 appearances in 2011-12. Overall, the stats seem similar, but he has in fact become a very different player.

When Madrid signed Ronaldo for a world-record fee of €94 million in 2009, they bought a winger with blistering pace, dribbling ability and tremendous technique - a player who could score from anywhere.

Six years on, Cristiano is still scoring. His 48 Liga goals means he will win the Pichichi award again this term and also claim the European Golden Shoe for an unprecedented fourth time. But the Portuguese has had to change his game in recent times as he gets older and at the age of 30, he is a different footballer to the one Madrid signed from Manchester United.

The Ronaldo running from deep and dribbling past defenders as a talented 24-year-old is now something of the past. The 2009 Cristiano set up chances for his team-mates; these days he finishes them off. And a look at his recent strikes against Sevilla, Espanyol and Getafe are proof of that. Although he still starts on the left, the 30-year-old is much more of a centre-forward these days.

Of the 48 goals he scored in La Liga this term, 41 of those (85 per cent) were netted with a single touch, while 43 of the 48 (90%) were converted inside the box. Ten (21%) were penalties, while 12 (25%) were headers - a career high for Ronaldo - and only two were scored from free-kicks (4%). And both of those came in the last few weeks of the Liga season as well, following a frustrating few months from dead-ball situations - once a speciality of the Portuguese.

Looking solely at the stats, CR7 looks much more like CR9 - a traditional centre-forward. But back in his first season at Madrid, when he actually wore the number 9 because Raul was still at the club, the numbers were different. In 2009-10, Ronaldo scored 26 times in La Liga, with only 61% of those coming from his first touch, while just 12% came from headers. That season, Ronaldo also netted eight times from individual strikes he himself had created - something now virtually redundant in his game, even if he has converted almost double the amount of goals in 2014-15.

In 2009-10, Cristiano played under Manuel Pellegrini, before featuring for three seasons with compatriot Jose Mourinho on the bench and then two more for the recently sacked Carlo Ancelotti.

With Rafa Benitez now set to take over next week at the Santiago Bernabeu, it will be interesting to see the evolution of Ronaldo's game in 2015-16 as he closes in on Raul's record of 323 strikes for Madrid. One thing, however, seems certain - there will be plenty of goals.

Sevilla Players Will Beg Emery To Stay - Carrico

Sevilla players will beg Emery to stay - Carrico
Sevilla's players will beg Europa League-winning coach Unai Emery to stay amid reported approaches from across Europe, according to defender Daniel Carrico.

The Spanish outfit clinched a record fourth Europa League crown on Wednesday with a 3-2 victory over Dnipro in Warsaw, successfully defending the title they won with victory over Benfica in Turin 12 months ago.

And the consistent successes have led to interest in Emery from the likes of AC Milan, Real Madrid and West Ham United in recent weeks, but Carrico is hopeful that the players will be able to persuade him to stay now that Champions League football has been secured.

"I think he is the key for us. He is our leader, a very important coach. We hope he will stay with us for next season but it is difficult because he is one of the best coaches in the world," Carrico told Goal.

"But now that we are going to play in the Champions League I hope that will help to persuade him to stay with us.

"We will beg him to stay. Of course nobody can ask more than to play in the Champions League. We are going to play in the best competition and that might help us when we ask him to stay."

The Rojiblancos were backed by around 10,000 in the Stadion Narodowy, and Carrico was quick to praise their impact throughout a season which also saw them finish in fifth place in La Liga.

"The fans are crazy. You should see at least one game in our stadium because it is unbelievable how they help us to win games. Sometimes we are losing and when they start to sing it is unbelievable. We just keep winning for them.

"We went 34 games one year without losing a game in our stadium, and in that you can see how important our supporters are."

And with Champions League football to come, the 26-year-old says there is no reason why they cannot succeed in the showpiece competition.

"We don't know what more we can do, but we have great ambitions and next season we will play in the Champions League. It's the biggest competition in the world and we want to do something in this competition."

‘Balotelli Staying At Liverpool’

Misfiring Liverpool striker Mario Balotelli will remain at the club next season, his agent Mino Raiola claimed on Wednesday.

Balotelli, 24, struggled in his debut campaign at Anfield following his £16 million move from AC Milan last year, scoring just one league goal and four in all competitions.

It has prompted speculation that Liverpool, who did not qualify for the Champions League, will look to move the Italy international on in the close-season transfer window.

But Raiola told Sky Sports: "We have talks with Liverpool and he will stay. I spoke many times with the club and they were happy with his input as a professional."

Asked if Balotelli and Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers had successfully adapted to working with each other, Raiola replied: "I think Mario did. I cannot talk for Brendan Rodgers.

"Obviously we're pretty confident it'll happen next year."

Wenger: Benzema? Vidal? Arsenal Not Thinking About Transfers

Wenger: Benzema? Vidal? Arsenal not thinking about transfers
Arsene Wenger has admitted that he is a fan of Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal and has refused to rule out the possibility of signing the Chilean and Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema in the summer.

The north Londoners were considering an ambitious summer swoop for Benzema and are convinced that the former Lyon star would be keen on a switch.

When asked about Arsenal's interest in the France forward and Vidal, Wenger told reporters that his concentration remains solely on the upcoming FA Cup final, not on summer moves:

"I like Arturo Vidal. You can suspect that at the moment I'm not in a transfer mode.

"We'll deal with transfers after the FA Cup final. It's all suspicions, nobody knows if its true or not."

The Frenchman was similarly quiet when quizzed about Arsenal's interest in Liverpool winger Raheem Sterling on May 19, with the 20-year-old expected to tell Brendan Rodgers he wants to leave the club when the transfer window reopens.

Lerner To Stand Down As Villa Chairman

Aston Villa's American owner Randy Lerner will stand down as club chairman whether or not he manages to sell the club, he said on Wednesday.

In an interview with The Times newspaper, he said he should have moved aside some years ago and that he took responsibility for the team's poor performance over the last few seasons.

Lerner, 53, has been trying to sell the club he bought in 2006 for some time and is looking for between 150-200 million pounds ($231.21-308.28 million).

"Plan A remains to find a buyer or Plan B (is) find a new chairman," he said.

"The club's performance over the last five or so years has left quite a lot to be desired and that falls squarely on my shoulders.

"Happily, we've not been relegated but I haven't gotten it nearly right enough."

Villa finished one place off relegation from the Premier League, three points ahead of the bottom three teams, but Tim Sherwood's side could still make it a memorable season by beating favourites Arsenal in the FA Cup final on Saturday.

That would be their first major trophy success since 1996.

Under Martin O'Neill they finished sixth for three seasons running from 2008 but he walked out, claiming insufficient financial backing from Lerner, whose subsequent appointments were far less successful.

Casillas: Whistling Made Me Angry - But ICan't Imagine Leaving Madrid

Casillas: Whistling made me angry - but I can't imagine leaving Madrid
Iker Casillas says he has never been moved to tears by the whistles of Real Madrid fans but admits he has been angered by his treatment.

The goalkeeper's form has been under persistent scrutiny during the past 18 months following a handful of high-profile blunders and a dismal performance with Spain at the World Cup last summer.

However, Carlo Ancelotti reinstated him as undisputed No.1 across all competitions ahead of 2014-15, which drew ire from supporters who thought summer signing Keylor Navas deserved to start.

With Ancelotti having since been sacked this week and David de Gea linked with a big-money move this summer, speculation remains rife that Casillas will ultimately be forced to leave the club - but he admits he cannot envisage doing so.

"I want to face the season with the belief I have always had over the years, that's the passion for this position that I have,” he told Cadena SER.  "I'll be in this goal next season and I do not imagine leaving the Real Madrid.

"I would hold off another goalkeeper because I am competitive. But there will never be a problem between myself and Real Madrid.

"What I want and desire is for the good of those who come to the Santiago Bernabeu, the people who call this club their home. It's not the typical brown-nosing flattery, it is the truth.

"I'm a very emotional person and I let the whistling get to me too much, though I never went home crying. But yes, I was angry at the response."

When put on the spot about Manchester United No.1 and Spain international team-mate De Gea being brought in, he added: "De Gea is an awfully nice guy and I'm used to his presence."

Mourinho Pokes Fun At Rivals

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho says his Premier League winning players have not been given the credit they deserve and took time to make fun of the teams that finished below them on Tuesday.

The 52-year-old Portuguese – whose side finished the season eight points clear of 2014 champions Manchester City – used the end of season Chelsea dinner to use a convoluted story to poke fun at City, Arsenal, who finished third, and fourth-placed Manchester United.

To a backdrop of a graphic showing a pitch with two goals he addressed first of all Louis van Gaal-managed United – the 'plain red shirted team' – saying they would have preferred to play without goals.

"That team plays really well and the ball goes and goes and goes and the quality of the ball possession is really beautiful, but no goals," said Mourinho.

"And they ask the international board of Fifa to play like this, but they were told that it was not possible, that the bigger percentage of ball possession doesn't win matches and they were not champions."

City, 'the sky blue shirted team', at least wanted to play with one goal.

"They were fantastic and they scored a lot of goals and the goals were coming from every position and they score and they score and they score, but they never conceded goals, because no goal.

"Again, the international board told them 'I'm sorry, you can't be champions because football is with two goals'."

Vis-a-vis Arsenal, 'the team with red shirts, white sleeves' did want to play with two goals.

"They were scoring some, they were also conceding some. They were fantastic. They scored really beautiful goals, they concede some goals too and they were almost there," said Mourinho, who also guided Chelsea to the League Cup trophy.

"But they asked the international board to play only between January and April. And they were told 'no chance, no chance'.

"You have to play between August and May, so they couldn't be champions."

Which brought him nicely to Chelsea – the team in blue shirts – and why they had won the title and not the other three, even harking back to his days in 2010 as Real coach when he defended his tactics against Barcelona and critics accused him of parking the bus in terms of how many men he put behind the ball.

"They (Chelsea) wanted to play with the normal rules and they know that to win matches they had to score one more goal than the opponent," said Mourinho.

"How can you do this? By scoring a lot of goals or not conceding and scoring one.

"And they did it both ways. Scoring a lot, conceding some. Scoring one goal and conceding no goals.

"That was the option and lots of goals were conceding, they played from August till May and sometimes they brought the bus."

Arrested Fifa Officials Face Extradition

Six high-ranking soccer officials, including two vice-presidents of world governing-body Fifa, were arrested by Swiss police on Wednesday and detained pending extradition to the United States.

The arrests were made by plain-clothed police shortly after dawn at a plush Zurich hotel where Fifa officials are staying ahead of this week's Fifa presidential election.

The Swiss Federal Office of Justice (FOJ) did not identify which officials were arrested but confirmed that Fifa president Sepp Blatter was not among them.

The New York Times and the BBC both reported that Jeffrey Webb and Eugenio Figueredo, both Fifa vice-presidents, were among the six detained.

The FOJ said in a statement that the officials were suspected by U.S. investigators of having received or paid bribes totaling millions of dollars.

"The US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York is investigating these individuals on suspicion of the acceptance of bribes and kickbacks between the early 1990s and the present day," the statement said.

"The bribery suspects -- representatives of sports media and sports promotion firms -- are alleged to have been involved in schemes to make payments to the soccer functionaries -- delegates of Fifa and other functionaries of Fifa sub-organizations -- totaling more than US$100 million."

More than 10 officials were expected to be indicted but not all were in Zurich. The New York Times said Jack Warner, Eduardo Li, Julio Rocha, Costas Takkas, Rafael Esquivel, José Maria Marin and Nicolas Leoz were also indicted.

Fifa did not make any immediate comment following the arrests but are due to hold a news conference at 0900 GMT on Wednesday.

Most of the officials are in Switzerland for the Fifa Congress, where Blatter faces a challenge from Jordan's Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein in a presidential election on Friday when the Swiss administrator will attempt to secure a fifth term at the helm.

Prince Ali, who has promised to clean up Fifa if elected to the top job, released a brief statement.

"Today is a sad day for football," he said.

"Clearly this is a developing story, the details of which are still emerging. It would not be appropriate to comment further at this time."

The New York Times said more than a dozen Swiss law enforcement officials arrived at Zurich's Baur au Lac hotel early on Wednesday, took keys from the registration desk and headed up to the rooms.

CONCACAF FOCUS

One Fifa official was led by the authorities from his room to a side-door exit of the hotel, the Times said, adding that officials from the body's powerful executive committee were being targeted.

"We're struck by just how long this went on for and how it touched nearly every part of what Fifa did," the paper quoted an unnamed law enforcement official as saying.

"It just seemed to permeate every element of the federation and was just their way of doing business. It seems like this corruption was institutionalized."

The Times said much of the enquiry was focused on the Concacaf region, which governs soccer in the North America, Central America and the Caribbean.

The confederation's former boss Warner was regularly dogged by accusations of corruption before he resigned in 2011, putting an end to investigations of the Trinidadian.

Prosecutors expected to announce the case at a news conference at the Brooklyn U.S. attorney's office, which is leading the investigation on Wednesday, the Wall Street Journal said in a separate report.

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch, Federal Bureau of Investigation Director James Comey and Internal Revenue Service criminal chief Richard Weber were expected to appear in Brooklyn to announce the case, the WSJ said.

The reports offer a fresh blow to the credibility of Fifa, which has suffered repeated accusations of wrongdoing over the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, which were awarded to Qatar and Russia respectively.

Fifa appointed an independent investigator to look into the allegations and though a summary of his report found some wrongdoing on the part of the Qatari and Russian bid committees, Fifa's ethics judge concluded it was not enough to question the entire process.

The investigator, former attorney Michael Garcia, subsequently resigned from his role in December after criticising the handling of his report.

Damian Collins, the British MP who founded the reform group New Fifa Now, said the news was hugely significant for Fifa and could have a massive impact on the governing body.

"The chickens are finally coming home to roost and this sounds like a hugely significant development for Fifa," he told Reuters by telephone.

"It proves that Sepp Blatter's promises over the last few years to look into corruption at Fifa have not materialised and because he has totally failed to do this, it has been left to an outside law enforcement agency to do the job and take action."

Blow For Arsenal! Transfer Target 'Very Close' To Agreeing Juventus Move

Blow for Arsenal! Transfer target 'very close' to agreeing Juventus move
Arsenal target Sami Khedira is 'very close' to agreeing a summer move to Juventus, according to reports in Spain.

The Real Madrid midfielder is out of contract at the end of the current season and he has confirmed he will move on.

That has seen him linked with Arsenal, while Chelsea are another club said to be tracking the German international.

But Marca believe Champions League finalists Juventus have stolen a march on their rivals and are on the verge of announcing a deal that will see Khedira join them on a free transfer

That would mean Arsene Wenger has to act fast if he is to have any chance of luring Khedira to the Emirates.

Man United Flop Falcao Could Remain In The Premier League Next Season

Man United flop Falcao could remain in the Premier League next season
Manchester United misfit Radamel Falcao could yet still end up playing in the Premier League next season, according to reports in France.

The Red Devils have sent the Colombian striker back to parent club Monaco after a miserable season at Old Trafford, which yielded just four goals in 26 Premier League appearances.

But Ligue 1 giants Monaco want to sell the 29-year-old, and according to French newspaper L'Equipe, several teams from England's top flight are chasing the former Atletico Madrid man - despite having seen United ship the striker out at the first opportunity.

Falcao earns around £10m-a-year at the Stade Louis II and the club's hierarchy believe there are younger and less expensive options which could fit the bill and satisfy the requirements of UEFA's Financial Fair Play regulations.

Italian duo AC Milan and Juventus are both also interested in his signature.

Chelsea's Moses Could Return To Stoke City, Admits Hughes

Chelsea's Moses could return to Stoke City, admits Hughes
Stoke City boss Mark Hughes has not ruled out a close-season swoop for Chelsea loanee Victor Moses after being impressed by the winger this season.

Moses played 19 games in the Premier League before a hamstring injury in April ended his campaign and saw him return to the Blues to recover.

However, such was the 24-year-old's impact at the Britannia Stadium, Hughes would be keen to see him back next season.

"Those are options you can pursue, because you can get good players in and not commit huge chunks of money," Hughes told the Stoke Sentinel .

"We've done okay ourselves with loans over the last couple of years.

"It was good to see Victor back at the ground for the final game of the season. I thought it was important he came, along with Bojan, because they have obviously played their part in our season as well as those on show for the last game.

"He's back at Chelsea now, but hopefully we can still do something. We'll have to see."

Stoke finished the campaign with a 6-1 demolition of Liverpool on Sunday, securing ninth place and a record haul of 54 points.

I Was Angry With Ancelotti - Casillas

I was angry with Ancelotti - Casillas
Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has admitted he didn't always see eye to eye with Carlo Ancelotti following the coach's sacking on Monday.

The club captain lost his place to Diego Lopez after an injury during Jose Mourinho's final season at the Santiago Bernabeu and failed to win it back under the Italian the following term, though he has been No.1 this campaign.

And he has now revealed that he was angered by the original snub but wished Ancelotti well for the future after reflecting on the coach's departure.

He told Cadena SER: "It is a demanding club and the president and the board have made the best decision.

"But I thank Carlo for what he has done for me, even though last year I was angry because he did not play me much.

"He is a noble person and I wish him well. Madrid will always be his home."

Casillas's own future has been the subject of great speculation following reports Madrid will move for Manchester United keeper David de Gea this summer.

However, the 34-year-old is convinced he will still be at the club next season and has no intention of giving up his shirt without a fight.

"I am sure that I will continue here next season. Sure. I can't imagine I will not be at the club next season. I want to finish my career here.

"If things were not working I would have to leave, but now I feel good and I am strong. I will face the coming season as if it were my first here, that's my challenge."

Casillas was booed by his own supporters in several games towards the end of the season following a number of high-profile mistakes.

Bale Pledges To Come Back Stronger

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has promised to "come back stronger" next season and quashed media speculation he might leave the club he joined in 2013 for a world record fee.

The Welsh international had a disappointing second year in Spain as his team failed to win a major trophy, prompting the sacking of coach Carlo Ancelotti on Monday.

Whistled by some fans at Real's Bernabeu stadium, Bale's agent raised eyebrows this month when he complained the 25-year-old's teammates were not passing the ball to him enough and he has also been criticised for what some perceive as selfishness in front of goal.

Reports in England have suggested he might leave, with Manchester United apparently interested in signing the former Tottenham Hotspur man.

However, Bale took to Twitter on Tuesday to say he would be vying for titles again with the world's richest club by income in 2014-15.

"Not the end of the season we had hoped for, we always want to win trophies," Bale wrote.

"Will be working hard in the off season and looking forward to coming back next season stronger with @realmadrid."

Bale's woes have marked a startling turnaround for a player who scored in the finals of the Champions League and the King's Cup last term.

He has scored 17 goals in 48 outings in all competitions this season, compared with 22 in 44 appearances in 2013-14.

Bale has also produced slightly fewer assists, setting up 11 goals for teammates after 12 the previous year.

The statistics are similar but according to a survey of 725 Real members conducted by market research firm SigmaDos for Marca sports daily, Bale rated five out of 10 for the season.

That compared unfavourably with Portuguese teammate Cristiano Ronaldo who scored 7.8 after netting a La Liga-best 48 goals and 61 in all competitions.

Arsenal's Sanchez Wins Fan Award

Arsenal dynamo Alexis Sanchez was on Tuesday announced as the Professional Footballers' Association (PFA) Fans' Player of the Year after an excellent first season in English football.

Sanchez, 26, joined Arsenal from Barcelona last year in a reported £35 million ($53.9 million, 49.5 million euros) deal and has been an instant hit, scoring 16 Premier League goals and supplying eight assists.

His performances saw him named on the six-man shortlist for the PFA's Player of the Year award, which went to Chelsea's Eden Hazard.

But the Chile international beat Hazard and Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero to the fans' award in a public poll that received over 200 000 votes.

Later on Tuesday he was also named Facebook's inaugural Player of the Year winner in which over a million votes were cast globally.

Sanchez beat off Hazard, again, and Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

In a poll monopolised by the two north London clubs in the Premier League, Spurs' Harry Kane won Young Player of the Year while Arsenal's Arsene Wenger won the manager award and Arsenal, who defend their FA Cup trophy in this weekend's final against Aston Villa, the team of the year despite finishing third in the league table 12 points adrift of champions Chelsea.

Lampard Can't Wait To Sample NY Life

Frank Lampard can't wait to start his new life in New York after ending his glittering Premier League career in typically stylish fashion.

Lampard said farewell to English football with the opening goal for Manchester City in their 2-0 win over Southampton at Eastlands on Sunday before his departure was acknowledged with a presentation after the match.

It was Lampard's 259th goal in 882 club matches and the perfect send-off as the former Chelsea and England midfielder prepares to join Major League Soccer outfit New York City.

"It was emotional but I am very proud," said 36-year-old Lampard, whose contribution to English football was acknowledged with a presentation after the game.

"There were loads of emotions - a tiny bit of sadness to finish but much more of a good feel.

"The game went well, I scored a goal and what the club did for me at the end and the way the fans reacted - I couldn't have asked for much more.

"I can go away saying it was an absolute pleasure. I still feel fit and I feel like I can play for a couple more years. Maybe I could have done that in the Premier League, my choice is to play in America.

"That is my new challenge now. I feel fit and ready to go for it. I don't want to go and make up the numbers. I want to go there and carry on and do something good."

Lampard, who was released by Chelsea last year, joined City as a stop-gap before planning to move to New York for the start of the 2015 MLS season.

But the move proved unexpectedly fruitful and City reached agreement with their sister US club to retain him until the end of their 2014-15 campaign.

Lampard admits there was frustration after that extension was agreed as City manager Manuel Pellegrini then stopped playing him regularly.

It proved a critical period of the season as City fell behind eventual champions Chelsea in the title race.

"The only difficult period for me was when we went into the new year level-pegging with Chelsea at the top," Lampard said.

"I felt I was really contributing to the team but then I had a few months where I hardly started any of the games and that was difficult.

"It was a frustrating couple of months but I kept a level head about it because I was just very happy to be here."

Drogba May Join Lampard, Gerrard In US

Didier Drogba will not play for another English team when he leaves Chelsea and may follow Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard by ending his career in the United States.

The 37-year-old former Ivory Coast forward played his final game for Chelsea when the Premier League champions beat Sunderland 3-1 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

"There are some really fantastic teams in the Premier League but my love for this club...I can't share it with another English team," he told the Daily Telegraph on Monday.

"Since I put the news I am leaving Chelsea on social media, I was in the dressing-room and I was receiving some calls from teams which is really unusual.

"It showed that maybe I can still bring something to a team. Of course I'm interested in the USA," added Drogba. "Now I'm going to have a few days and weeks to think about what is good for me next but all I want is to play."

His former Chelsea teammate Lampard, who was on loan with Manchester City this season, is about to start a new career with New York City FC.

Gerrard, who used to patrol England's midfield alongside Lampard, played his last game for Liverpool on Sunday before joining the Los Angeles Galaxy.

Drogba re-signed for Chelsea last year after leaving in 2012 following a highly successful eight-year spell with the London club.

The Ivorian has won four Premier League titles with Chelsea, three League Cups, four FA Cups and the Champions League.

Drogba was voted the club's greatest-ever player by supporters in 2012.

Making Sense Of Keshi's Latest Nigeria Squad Including His Mikel Omission

John Obi Mikel and Stephen Keshi Nigeria
Stephen Keshi ’s stint with the Super Eagles has frequently lurched from absurd to inspired, and back again. It therefore is no surprise to see the composition of the maiden squad of his second coming – the foreign-based contingent that is.

This list of 15 was revealed on Sunday evening, and will join up with their Nigeria Professional Football League counterparts in camping for the Afcon 2017 Qualifier against Chad.

There is a lot to be gleaned from this list, especially considering (seemingly) arbitrary personnel decisions were the bane of his first stint in charge. For every Michael Babatunde and Sunday Mba, there was a Michael Uchebo, a Nosa Igiebor, a Ramon Azeez; this lent an air of potluck to Keshi’s successes – if you have enough knives in your hand, you are bound to cut something.

On the evidence of this list though, very little has changed.
The most high-profile omission is of Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel, only this last weekend won another Premier League title. There really is not much to carp about on that front: Mikel has struggled for both form and fitness this year, and is hardly the sort of consistent performer on the international stage for whom an exception can be made.

The question then is: if this is the criterion on which Mikel has been left out, how is a player like Ogenyi Onazi included?

The Lazio man has made 18 appearances (nine as starts) for Lazio this term, but has served the Rome club better by staying out of the way mostly. He has also lost his place as the go-to option in the event of injury or suspension, usurped by 20-year-old prospect Danilo Cataldi. His form with the national side has also suffered – Onazi has looked half the player since Blaise Matuidi ended his World Cup in Brazil.

For that matter, how to justify the central defensive pairing of Godfrey Oboabona and Kenneth Omeruo? Since the Big Boss stumbled upon the pairing in the second game of the 2013 Afcon, these two have been virtually undroppable.

While the virtue of familiarity in defence is clear, neither of these two have played a good game for the national team in ages. Both are also bench players in such 'elite' clubs as Caykur Rizespor and Middlesbrough.

Some have argued the pickings are slim in Europe for Nigerian centre-backs; I say why pick for the sake of it then? This list is intended to augment the home-based call-ups, which includes the NPFL’s best defenders. In terms of form and fitness, they are clearly ahead, so play them.

This lack of coherence is also evident in the omissions as well. Aaron Samuel has quickly endeared himself to the public for his knack of the impact goal while not playing especially well. If his limitations could be overlooked on the grounds of lack of alternatives then, what about now with Emem Eduok and Osaguona Ighodaro in sparkling form in North Africa? The former in particular is a superb footballer, and would be an upgrade on the China-based blunt instrument. Ighodaro struck five times in six games in the CAF Champions League until his Raja Casablanca side were eliminated from the competition.

Most surprising is the call-up of Rabiu Ibrahim. The former U-17 world champion, whose style and ability evoked comparisons with wizard midfielder Jay-Jay Okocha, has struggled to fulfil his immense promise due to a spate of unfortunate injuries. After failed stints at former European champions Celtic and PSV Eindhoven, it is at Slovakian club Trencin that he has found a home.

After a relatively injury-free season, his first in a long while, he has been rewarded with an invitation to the Super Eagles. Whichever way you look at it, it feels wrong. Rabiu has hardly stood out - four goals and one assist in 17 appearances, and only thrice has he completed 90 minutes - instead it seems he is in the squad on the basis of that spark back in 2007 under the tutelage of the late Yemi Tella.

If his reputation precedes him, it is perhaps because it is easy for great players to make themselves the template, even for future generations. Okocha was a stellar footballer, but getting caught up trying to replace him ignores the fact that the national team predated him, and as such is perfectly capable of functioning without him or a plaster-cast clone.

The issue of creativity from midfield is one that has raged on for years, and which Keshi was unable to address in his first stint. If his genius solution this time around is to try to resurrect an eight-year ghost in a player only just piecing his career together after much heartache, then the next two years of his contract will be exceeding long indeed.
